PERSONAL. The 'liev. T. W. Veaiic and Mossra D, F. Keir and F. Frampton returned on Friday from the Methodist district Synod at Waimate. General News, A boy named William Cowans, of Ashburton, fell off his bicycle on Friday evening and received a fracture of the arm above tho elbow. He was removed to the County Hospital. A special train conveying Eakaia picnickers to Timaru passed through Ashburton on Saturday morning. Tho Tinwald Sunday School children went to Timaru and a team from the Tinwald Tennis Club played tho Timaru Y.M.O.A. team. A meeting of tho Ashburton High School old girls was held in tho A. and P. rooms oil Thursday evening to consider a proposal to form an Old Girls' Swimming Club. Miss Arnott occupied the chair. The matter was taken up most enthusiastically by those present. and it was unanimously decided to form a club, the same to be a branch of the Old Pupils' Association. The fee was fixed at 2s 6d per member for the season. A deputation was selected to wait on the headmaster to arrange hours for use of the bath. The following committee was appointed: Chairwoman, Miss Arnott; secretary and treasurer, Miss Edna Humphreys; committee, Misses N. Cowan, E. Hunter, M. 801 l and J. Dunlop.

The Hickson Mission. Mr Hickson, with his niece, Miss St. Claire, and his secretary, Mrs Congleton, was welcomed at tho Ashburton station on Saturday by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs Galbraith), and a small party. One of tho number was successful in his roftearing two weeks ago, having the charge against him dismissed. Mr E. Kennedy appeared for Gourdie, and Senior-Sergeant Jackson for tho police. The evidence was on. similar lines to that of tho previous case. The Bench said the episode at the church did not improve with acquaintance. The principle,'as far as tho Court was concerned, in arriving at its decision was: Did Gourdie go to the church for any criminal purposo? In the Court's opiinon he was not there for any criminal purpose. The case against him would accordingly be dismissed. The Bench added that Gourdie hud sailed very close to the law and it might not be inappropiate for the Bench to adviso him to follow somo of the advice given by the SeniorSergeant.
