On account of a large Italian population the British naval base of Malta exhibits as many problems for the British Government as does Tunis for the French Government, for the same reason. . Although the French population in Tunis is 50,000 against the Italian population of 150,000, the Italian language is not officially recognised there, and Italian schools are supported either by the Italian Government or by subscriptions and fees. In Malta, on the contrary, Italian is official language of the law Courts, and parents have the right to decide whether their children shall learn English or Italian in the primary schools. A new law has been approved by the Chamber of Senate of Malta which makes obligatory instruction in Italian as well as in English from the third class in primary schools upwards. In Malta, however, in 1922, 95 per cen*-. of the parents chose English for their children in the primary schools. In Tunis the Italian enbjects constantly demanding lau"gnage rights.
