Found Dead.

The body, of. a, man named James Taylor Ballard was found in his cottage at 36 Hawkhuret road, Lyttelton, on Saturday morning. The body was fully dressed and was sitting in a chair in the kitchen. Mr Wyvern Wilson, Coroner,' held an inquest on Saturday afternoon". Evidence of identification 'was given by Constable M. Hodgins, who said'that deceased was sixty-one years of age, a wharf labourer, and formerly a member of tiio Melbourne police force.. His wife lived nenr Melbourne. Information was ;riven te the police by neighbours, that Ballard had not bsen seen since the '■ previous, Wednesday evening. Dr. B. H. Gilmour said he had made a post-mortem examination of the body, found sirai of old-standing congestion of ■ the lungs and pleurisy. The heart was dilated and there was muscular degeneration of the walls. The cause of death was syncope r.risinp from senile degeneration of the heart muscles. A verdict was returned accordingly. Witness warned him to keep clear of a ratce. of trucks, but as the trucks -were passing he jumped and caught hold of the door of a truck and clung on. As he. was in imminent danger of tailing underneath, witness called out to stop the engine. When remonstrated-with, the accused replied with a volley of' strong language. Accused said that ho was so drunk at the time, that he did not remember crossing -the railway yards, or jumping'on to the truck. He regretted having uoed the obscene language, and-wished to thank the statioiimaster for' saving- his life. : ' On the charge of drunkenness the accused was convicted and discharged. He waa fined £s,' or a month's imprisonment, for using obscene language. . Robert Flanagan waa charged with, being a seaman on the Tregonnel, he did desert from the vessel at Wellington on September 26th. Ho pleaded guilty. Captain' S. Richards said that the accused went ashore at 9 o'clock that morning, and, as the vessel was to sail at noon, the fourth engineer was sent ashore to . get him, but he declined to return, with the icjult that the .vessel was held up for an hour and a-half. He was afterwards sent down to Lyttelton, but still refused to go aboard, saying that if he was put on by force he would not work. The accused said that the captain's statement was correct. He said that he was diss-satisfied with the present crew, and would rather lose any* monoy coming io ,him than work among-the men. He was convioted and ordered to be placed on board, and .was ordered to pay all costs incidental to the prosecution. I
