BOWLING NOTES.

The first game of the season will bo I played to-morrow, when the New Brighton Club will declare their green open, j A rink tournament has been decided j upon, and already a record entry has i been received. No doubt- tho fine j weather which has been experienced I during the past week hag been- respon- | sible for so large an entry, and the only thing left to make this tournament a success is a fine day. The president (Mr Muirson) and his executive will leave nothing wanting on their part i to make the day a. success, therefore those who have had their entries accepted can look forward to a good time. Some exceptionally strong rinks have entered, and, even although the season, is only commencing, elder players ought to give a very good account of themselves. The Executive Committee oi the New Zealand Bowling -Association, along witn the committee apl>oinLed rrom tn-o locui centre —-Mtssi's joiin lirown, Ci. Black well, J. D. Cuiville, M. Baniett, W. iierrick, H. Bursou, F. Stems, A. J. Benzie, J. Du l?eu, C., Vij>er, "• Spiller and F. \\ ade —met tins week and formed their sub-coniffiittoes for the carrying out oi the different arrangements in connexion with the forthcoming tournament F/very item ot detail was gone into thoroughly, and the enthusiasm shown by those present augurs weli for a very successful Dominion tournament in January. . Early next month reports will be made, and from then onwards meetings will be held at regular intervals, and by the time the final week arrives visitors may rest assured that an-angements will be complete. From tbi enthusiasm show n I may 6ay that never has any committee set their mir.ds so forcibly to do the right tiling than this committee, and it will be a very great surprise if the executive do not make it one of the greatest tourneys has ever been held. The many friends of Mr J. H. Maynard, of the Canterbury Club, will regret to hear of his serious illness. Mr Maynard has been laid aside for some time now, and it is to be regretted that his genial form will not be seen on the green on opening day. Later on in the season he may be able to take his accustomed place, when he will be assured 6f a cordial reception from his old club mates.
Mr Arthur Legh, the well-known Edgeware player, has left his old dub through change of residence, and will probably be seen on the St. Albaiia green this season. He will be much missed by his old club mates, as'he-is one of the most genial of players. However, he will be a decided acquisition to his new club, and if he plays up to form he ought to be '/knocking at the door" m the competitions. Mr "Bob" Borland, who for so many years has been associated with the 'Canterbury Club' is going to tihrow in his. lot with ltakaia. As the majority of bowlers know, our genial mend is an "ambassador of commerce, ' and as his duties lie more' in South CanterDury than they do in the Oathedral City, one cannot grumble at him chasngmg his address. "Bob" Borland bolds the singles record 1 in the Canterbury Uun—three times a champion—and when one comes to think of the fine players the Canterbury Club possesses, _one can realise what a fine player he vs. Rakaia should decidedly benefit by his wide experience, and it will be plisasmg meet a team in the Dommiom tournament in January skipped by aur.genial friend.
Messrs Charles Innes and W. Osborne, of Wellington, who have been on a business trip m Christchurch, paid a viaii to the indoor rinks yesterday, and after rolling up a few bowls tormed a very High opinion of the venture, which was undertaken by the local bowlers They considered the idea was a splendid one, and well worthy .of support, as it was. in their opinion, tne best place for a young player to learn how to deliver a bowl properly, lhey were loud in their praise of tha> trueness of the floor,, the bowls rvinning just as well as oil a perfect, green.
The Beckenham green will be open for play on the 13th of next month. During the recess opportunity has been taken to make several alterations to the pavilion, and when members and- visitors meet on opening day they will be agreeably surprised at the improvements. The painter has been at work, and his efforts have, not been m vain, while the greenkeeper has also abided his "little bit" to make the surrounding as pleasing-to the eye as one co>uid wish for. The telephone has also been installed, which is a decided' convenience, and will no doubt be appreciated. Those who visit, the Opawa, Bowling Club on- the opening day-will '*> prised at the alterations made since last season. New enwy sates have been erected, a fresh entrance to the green iteelf has been constructed, and an addition to the pavilion which more than doubles its holdino- capacity. The new pavilion will be formally opened on the opening day ot the season. The Opawa Club will open its season on October 13th. By that time the pavilion will be finished and the various {'lterations completed. Ths club will start with a slightly decreased membership, chiefly owing to removals from the district, but- little or none of the real playina strength of the club will bo deleted'. The <iub will have a team in the Centre .Championship, and probably a team in the Pennants. Friendly matches will be arranged so that every pi aver will get a chance ot playing against a foreign club. Owing to the fact of the Dominion Tournament beinn- played in Christchurcli, an endeavour will be made to get the-club competitions completed early. Tlie --Mateh Committee liave got out a splendid programme, which only needs energetic work on the part of the members to make it a huge success. The Opawa Club will hold a Progressive Doubles Tournament on labour Day, starting at 10 a.m. The Edgewaro Club has fixed their opening day for October J 3th. This club has had a large increase in membership, and aa greenkeeper Hay man is busy getting the green *vnd all th® clnVs appointments into t( appl6-pie order, Edgowar© should bo assured of a successful season. The club has arranged a I?ink Tournament to be- held on Labour Day, and already a good entry is promised from visiting teams.
At the annual meeting of the Spreydon Bowling Club Mr Fenner presided over a fair "attendance. The club has 6tarted under very good conditions, the Domain Board having allocated £2OO towards tho laying down of a green, the club being responsible for expenses above that sum. The green has now been formed, but bid -weather held up tlie final dressing, that work being now in hand, and the seed will bo sown m a few days' time. This work has been under tho very ably supervision of Mr T. Bloor. Hie members have been doing good work, having planted a privet fence on two sides. A board fence is at present under construction. The income to date from subscriptions is £6 12s expenditure £4 17s 2d. credit balance £1 14s ■ lOd. In the election of! officers Mr Fenner was re-elected president, with Mr Roberts as senior vicenneeident; Mx 'W* "WardeLLi
•auditor, Mr Voss; hon. secretary. MiJohn Brackenridge: committee, Messrs Wear, Ell, Suttie, Milner, Smith, Fox, and J. Wiardell. The subscription for this year is 10s, arid £2 wheii the green is open' for play. It was. decided that the end of the financial year lie August 31st. It was intimated at the meeting ot the Council in Christchurch that;- although no official communication had been received, a team of South African bowlers was arranging, through Cook and Son, to visit New Zealand next summer. The proposed itinerary included visits to the North and South Islands, including Rotorua, the Wanganni river, the "West Coast, and the Cold Lakes.
