A sentence of six months' imprisonment was yesterday imposed on John Thomas Doberty for the manslaughter of Samuel James Cooks, who was killed as toe Tesult of a motor-car collision at St. Albans on July 14th. Golf. \ special article, "Golf—Cross Hazards," by Harry Vardon, will be found on Page 14. FOREIGN. European Crisis. Ju his latest article, Mr Lloyd George discusses Italy's action in precipitating a European, crisis. Problem of the Adriatic. The dispute between Italy and_ Jugoslavia regarding the execution of the Treaty of Kapallo is described by the Paris newspapers as a new war cloud in the Balkans. Italy and Greece. The Council of the League of Nations decided to reply to the Ambassadors' Conference that it desired to participate in an enquiry into the circumstances of the Janina murders, and suggested that the Court of International Justice should fix Greece's indemnity. Germany and the Buhr. The Berlin correspondent of "The Times" says it appears certain that Germany is preparing for a settlement with France regarding industrial co-operation in the Buhr. America and Europe. The policy of the United States in keeping aloof from European, affairs was discussed by Lord Birkenhead in a speech in Montreal. Japanese Disaster. It is estimated that 80,000 were killed and 100,000 injured in Tokyo, where 300,000 buildipgs were destroyed. Order in the capital and Yokohama is being gradually restored, but shelter, provisions, and clothing are extremely short. The total death-roll is estimated at 500,000. The "Morning Post," discussing the political effect of the Japanese catastrophe, says it enormously modifies the international situation in the Pac- ■ ific, since it has reduced Japan to the position of a second-class jpower.
