N.Z. LADIES' TOURNAMENT. INTER-ISLAND MATCH. ;S?£CIiX TO "rSOC T£XS9. *) XELSOXj September 6. More favourable weather conld not hare obtained this afternoon for the opening of tho New' Zealand Golf Charapionßiip on the Tnhunanui links, when the inter-Island match was played, resulting in a win for the North by three games to two, the remaining one being squared. A gentle sea hreeze was blowing, but not of sufficient strength to trouble the players. From the links the surrounding country presented a magnificent sight. To the west the rugged Tasm an ranges in their snowy mantle stood out clear cut against a bluo sky. To tho east Ben jNevia and Gordon's Knob were snow-capped, while a smooth blue eea gently lapped the western fringe of the ground, in such ideal surroundings it is not too much to say that the opening day commenced under the happiest conditions. So far as the play itself was concerned, nothing of a very startling gaturo was witnessed. Generally speaking, most of the competitors were beaten by the greens, which were exceptionally keen. In eomo instances tho turf was a triflo rough. Miss Payton and Miss Cracroffc-Wil-son lead off, and at the turn the JNorth Islander held an advantage of two. Both were driving well, but Miss Wilson failed mostly on the greens, and tho game finished on the 16th green with a win for the Northerner. The game between Mrs Slack, fresh from her honour at the recent Miramar tournament, and Miss Dixon, of Christchurch, provided a rather sensational finish, and the fortune of tho game at tho last hole, at all events, fell to Mrs Slack. After being four down after the eleventh hole was played, Miss Dixon quite altered the complexion of tho game and teeing ofi at the sixteenth she was dormy three. Her shot landed nicely on the green, while Mrs Slack went through and her second was some ten feet from tho hole. Miss Dixon missed a long putt, while Mrs Slack sunk her third with a beautiful one. Only wanting a half to win the match, the Southerner failed within easy distance of the hole. On the 18th green, Miss Dixon was dormy one, and again needed only a half, but luck was against her. Mrs Slack went well through the green with her approach, Miss Dixon lying in rather difficult ground to the right. Mrs Slack had the advantage of the next stroke. Miss Dixon, playing the !ike struck her opponent's ball and holed it, her own going wide. Miss Beads! (Christchurch) had no flifficulty in defeating Miss Robieson (Masterton), while Miss Acheson (Nelson) and Miss Eva Brown (Napier) tooK the game to the 19th hole before a decision was reached. Mrs Collinson, the Palmerston North representative, was too good for Mrs Mowbray, • the local champion, while Miss Bell (Wellington) finished 2 up and one on Mrs Kingscote (Christchurch). The result of the gam© was in dotibt until the last pair returned to the golf house. Following are the results, North Island players being mentioned first:— Miss Payton beat Miss Cracroft-Wil-son, 3 and 2. Mrs Slack and Misa Dixon, all square. Miss Robieson lost to Miss Beadel, 4 and 3. Miss Eva Brown lost to Miss Acheson, 1 down. Mrs Collinson beat Mrs Mowbray, 3 and 1. . " Miss Bell beat Mrs Kingscote, 2 and 1. fraoji x stxcial coeeespdsiibjjt.) NELSON, September 6. The inter-Island match was played this afternoon in perfect weather. The course is in very good order, but most of the visiting players find the greens very tricky. Tho match resulted in a win for the North Island by 3i games to 2s. Miss Cracroft-Wilson, who played first for the South Island, lost to Miss Payton (Auckland), 3 and 2. Miss Cracroft-Wilson was off her mashie and did not play her usual game. Miss Payton was 2 up at the turn, taking 44 for the first nine holes. Miss Margery Dixon halved .with Mra Slack. Miss Dixon was dormy one, and both were on the 18th green in four. Miss Dixon putted first, and was unlucky enough to knock her opponent's ball into the hole, making their match a draw. Miss Dixon's round was 84, and Mrs Slack's 85. Miss Beadel beat Miss Robieson 4 up and 3 to play. Miss Beadel was dormy .6 at the 12th hole. Miss Robieson won the next two holes each in one under bogey, and they halved the 15th. Miss Acheson beat Miss Eva Brown (Napier) 1 up at the 18th green. Thia was a very even match. Miss Brown was putting badly, taking three putts on several of the greens. Miss Acheson played a steady game. Mrs Mowbray lost to Mrs Collinson, 3 and 1. Mrs Kingscote and Miss Bell had an even game. Mrs Kingscote was 1 up at the 14th, Miss Bell winning the next three holes, making her 2 up and 1. NATIONAL HANDICAPS. (?sitss Assort/man tilbokait.) WELLINGTON, September 6.
