LOCAL EARTHQUAKE
& CONFINED TO CANTERBURY. Shortly after 9 o'clock yesterday morning the city rocked mildly under •the influence of a slight earth tremor, ■Which, nevertheless, was strong enough to spread alarm among people with the details of the Tokyo upheaval fresh in their memory. According to Mr H. F. Skey, of the Christchurcii Observatory, the earthquake began at -9hrs 09.4min New Zealand standard time, and the waves continued for about two minutes. It was merely a local afiair, probably having a fairly small origin about 70 miles aw ay. "i should not be surprised," said Mr Skey, "if it was a North Canterbury but I cannot say for certain as the instrument we have is a bit old fashioned, and the record is not perfect. We should have a MilneShaw instrument." The instrument at present installed in the observatory records only the east-west component of fhe motion of an earthquake.
