Lowndes is progressing favourably with liis patent rail invention for fitting to lifeboats (writes our London correspondent). This, it will be remembered, is to provide a means by which a a pro hold can be obtained on an overturned lifeboat, and whereby such a boat even in a rough .sea can be righted by the persons in tho water. Last week he demonstrated the invention at Southampton, when the marine superintendents of all the shipping companies in the port were present, and' Were much impressed with the exhibition. Tho appliance is fitted to the s.s. Biarritz, a cross channel steamer, and when the King and Queen paid a visit to Rome some weeks ago Sir Charles Madden demonstrated the safety appliance to their Majesties when proceeding across the Channel on board the vessel. If men like Newton could revisit tho earth to-day, they would probably, stand aghast at the extraordinary development of science. There is now in Sydney the Ameri- | can cruiser Milwaukee, £tt«d with an ext traordinary depth-finding apparatus known | as the Sonic sounding apparatus, the object of the visit being to give the members of the Pan-Pacific Science Congress as opportunity to witness a demonstration of its [ powers. The Sonic method of sounding, according to Professor Sir Edge Worth David, wLI wholly revolutionise modern methods of charting coast 3 and locating dangers to shipping, such as submarine reefs azui banks, the method being more rapid and more economical than that of sounding by means of tho lead and the line. The apparatus depends for its working on a method oi echoing, just as, in the case of sound waves, one throws one's voice out in an area where there is a good echo. In the Sonic method of sounding, an electric impulse is Sent downward- from the ship to the sea. bottom, and is reflected hack again to a receiver on the ship. The deeper the water, the longer is the time interval between the sending out and the echoing out of the impulse. A simple table enables the observer rapidly to convert the time interval into fathoms. Thus the depth is found. The wonderful apparatus, it is considered, will do much to speed up the charting of the oceans. Tho apparatus ia the outcome of devices for protecting marines during tha war.
