SIGNAL STATION.
NEW SITE PROPOSED.
A proposal is under consideration by the Lyttelton Harbour Board to remove the signal station from Adderley Head, to Godley Head. The engineer reported to the Board yesterday as follows: —This question has now been under consideration for some time, and the change has been advocated as a means of ameliorating the lonely conditions of life at Little Port Cooper. in order to meet their condition a good land access is necessary, and members have seen that such c;in be obtained by means of a road 4£ miles long to the top of EVans Pass. The harbourmaster reported favourably on this question in July of last year, pointing; out that the change would improve the condition of life for the lookout men, and would partially avoid the interruptions to telephonic communication from the station to Lyttelton, by getting rid of the cables across the harbour. After giving this matter very careful consideration, I am of opinion that the ultimate advantages of the proposed change would bo worth the cost, in that it would encourage a good class of man to occupv and liolfl the position of look-out man, as he would not be so cut off from contact with the outer world as at present, and could cultivate t-he ground and do< ji. little farming, J therefore recommend the change, subject to the Government installing the automatic light and t'no automatic fog-signal, making a road suitable for wheel traffic to Evans Pass, undertaking to supply stoves and fuel for the light and fogsigual, putting the buildings into good lepair, and handing over the reserve B°- IJ "d at a nominal rental, lhe report was agreed to and the engineer was authorised to negotiate with the Marine Department regarding i the terms to be arranged.
