HALSWELL. About twenty-five members of the Addington Burgesses' Association journeyed to Halswell on Monday evening t° play a friendly prime of cards with residents of tho district. A close contest ended in favour of Addington by £8 games to 81. Mr Wilson, on behalf °f the Ilals-well players, expressed pleasure at meeting the visitors, and hoped that more evenings would be .arranged. Slipper was provided, and the health °f tho winners ::nd losers was drunk. Mr F. Mathieson replied, and assured tho Halsiyell players that his team had thoroughly enj<yed themselves, and thanked them for the manner in which they had been entertained. He hoped to arrange for si return game .at a near date. Musical items were given by Messrs F. Mntliiosrtn. McMa'ion, J. O'Connor, and several others.

DARFIELD. At a well attended 'meeting of the Dariield Horticultural Society, held on, Tuesday, Mr W. Polo presided. A motion of sympathy ■ with-Sir C. G. J arm an and family in their recent bereavement was passed. The hon. secretary (Mr 11. G. Robinson) present-eel the annual report and balance-sheet, which disclcs?d a - very satisfactory statu of affaire. A credit balance of £"23 5s lOd existed, whilst assets to the value of £2O had been accumulated. Thirty-seven additional members were enrolled during the year. At _ the autumn show ISi individual exhibitors from nil parts of the district competed, with the record number of 1276 entries. In addition to many useful trophies presented, £42 Ifis 6d was allocated in prise-money to the 112 successful exhibitors. A sum of £ls was voted for the purchase of vasos. Regret was expressed at the resignation of Mr ltobinson as secretary. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr H. A. Knight; president, Mr W. "VV. OURUHIA. Last Friday evening a progressive cruchre party and danco was lield in the Ouruhia School. The winners of ih© euchre prizes -were Mr M. Percasky and Mr W. P. Spencer. During the evening, Mr and Mrs Bartlett were presented with a Kaiapoi rug from the seeidents of the district, and Mr Bartlett was also presented with a case of pipes from the School Committee, of which he had been a member for several years. Messrs Ashby, Spencer, S'tead, and 3>unlop snoke of the fine spirit which Mr and Mrs Bartlett had shown in everything connected with the district; also of the obliging manner; in which Mr Bartlett, as ganger, always treated those using the railway. Mr Bartlett expressed regret that he was leaving the district, and said he hoped that his successor would get on as well with everybody, as he had. On Tuesday next a euchre match "will be plavod in the Ouruhia School — Marshland v. Ouruhia.

METHVEN. Several trucks of poles have arrived for', the Ashburton Jlilectr.c Fewer Board. This material will be used for the construction of the line from Ashburton .to Metliven. It is understood that the work will be commenced at once, and that power will be available early in the new year.
