PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE

Tho Philosophical Institute of Canterbury met last night, Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf presiding over a good attendance. The chairman said (hat some members might h-Tva noted that' the volume of "Transactions" for 1921, which should have been published last year, had not yet appeared. The council of the Institute had done everything possible to have the publication of the volume expedited, and had recently received a perfectly unsatisfactory letter from the editor, who stated that it had been hoped to issue the' volume before the opening of last session of Parliament, but this had not been found possible. The chairman added that tho letter might have been satisfactory if it had been dated August, 1922, instead of 1923. He welcomed to the meeting Dr. McKay, of Greymouth, a member of the Institute, he said, who did not have <in opportunity to be present frequently at their meetings. Mr C. E. i'oweraker gave the third part of his paper on "The Bain Forests of Westland." He briefly recapitulated - the matters dealt with in his previous address on the subject, and then dealt with the-totara and white pine forestß of Westland. The address was illustrated by a large number of very fine iantern slides. Mr E. G. Hogg gave a paper on "Eecent Advances in Astronomy," in which he dealt, in much detail, with the principal features 'of the Milky Way, and with the problems connected variable stars. Owing to the lateness of'the hour the concluding portion of Mr Hogg's paper was postponed to a future meeting.
