FOLLOWING a criminal career. (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, September 5. His Honour Mr Justice Herdman admitted some difficulty in the Supreme> Coiirt to-daj in dealing with the case of Frank Bal.er, who, though only twenty-one, had followed a criminal career since 1917, and had escaped from custody while serving a sentence of fire years' reformative detention, getting out of Mount Eden Gaol on July 21st, and subsequently breaking and entering a store at Whakatane. The accused had qualified to be declared an habitual criminal, his Honour said; but he would not take this drastic course. He sentenced Bftl'er to three years' imprisonment with hard labour for breaking and enterin?, and a year for escaping from custody, the sentences to be concurrent.
