ALLEGED THEFT OF GOLD.
CHARGE AGAINST EX-DREDGE-MASTER. (pKEdS ASSOI't.Urf'S TELEGRAM.) BUNEDIN August 31. At the' Police Court Samuel James Howijohns was charged with the theft of 195 ounces of gold of the value of .-£7 80, the property of Samuel J. Luke and others. The evidence of a large number of witnesses was that the gold was similar in appearance and quality to the gold obtained by the Cardrona dredge on the C'lutha river, of which accused was dredgo-master for a year. This company went into ' liquidation some years ago when the returns fell off One witness was the gold officer of the Bank of New Zealand, who had assayed the Cardrona gold. He stated that the sample submitted by the police assayed closer to the Cardrona assay than any on tho bank records. The evidence further showed that accused admitted selling the gold, and stated he had had it in his possession for eight years, but wouldn't say where ho obtained it. He reserved his defence, and was committed for trial, bail being fixed at £SOO.
