Mr D. DuC. 01' MayfieM, and Mr 1\ H. Knight, of Ashburton, were sworn in as Justices of the Peace by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., yesterday. Mr Alex. Anderson, manager of the Gore branch of the National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., and formerly accountant and land salesman of the Ashburton branch, is at present visiting Ashburton. The Weather. Yesterday morning brought a welcome change in the weather in Ashburton County, in the shape of a shower" of rain, vrhich, after the past week's baking by nor'-westers, was much appreciated. Towards noon the clouds disappeared, but later in the afternoon the sky became overcast again, and rain appeared imminent. General News. Over 30 members of the Ashburton Savage Club, under Great Chief L. M. Espagne, made a successful raid on the Geraldine - Savage Club on Thursday night. The Ashburton: Savage 3 staged an excellent entertainment, and were roundly complimented 011 their efforts. The Geraldine Club was v ery generous in its hospitality, and the visit was one of the most pleasant made by the Ashburton Savages. Hockey. The following is the draw for the first round of the Ashburton Ladies' Hockey Association six-a-side tournament, which is being held to-day: — Rakaia A v. Hinds, Tinwald A v. Rakaia B, Methven A v. High School, Methven B v. Ashburton. The tournament is being held on the Domain. Football. Tho final of the senior banner of the Ashburton County Rugby Union will take place to-day at the Show Grounds. Great interest is being taken in the third meeting of Methven and Ashburton, and although the lattpr managed to defeat their opponents on the last two occasions, the countrysiders will have a strong team in the field, and fully expect to win. The following will represent-the Ashburton Club: —Tasker, Merrin, Stills, Templeton, Day, Betts, Wellman, Shannon, Meade, Sherlock, Stephens, Douglass, Porter, ,le Comptc, and Crawford. Special arrangements have been made with "The Press" to publish the scores of the test match on the specially prepared notice board at the football ground. This will be a great boon to the football enthusiasts of Ashburton, who wish to see the final of their own' competition. Cricket. The general meeting of the Tinwald Cricket Club,, held in the Tinwald Hall, was iargely, attended, and members were most enthusiastic. Mr H. Millichamp occupied the chair. The annual report and balance-sheot were read and adopted. The balancesheet showed tho assets to be £35, including £lO cash in hand. The liabilities were nil.

The following officers were elected: — Patron, Mr James Cow; president, Mr W. Bryant; vice-presidents, Messrs H Millichamp, T. Tarbotton, Jas. Gudsell, A. Petrie, W. Moses, G. Clarke, C. Day, W. Bell, B. Wills, H. Bell, J. Lowry, C. Edge, W, Tucker, and J. Hcseltine; captain, Mr H. Millichamp; vice-captain, Mr W. Brady; secretary. Mr A. Carroll; treasurer, Mr J. Gudsell; delegates to the Association, Messrs H. Millichamp and W. Thomas. The senior, team, last season played twen.ty matches, winning 11, losing,; G, ',*rtid drawing 2. The junior team had been runners-up in their competition. Two prizes which had 'leen givon to tho club were, presented by the chairman. ' Mr B. Wills's . prize, for the best batting average was won by W. Thomas, with an average of 30, and Mr H; Millichamp's prize for the best bowling by E. Bell, with 30 wickets at an average cost of 4.5 runs. . , The 1 meeting expressed,; its . thanks to all those who so ably supported the club last year, and tended to- further the interests of cricket in Tinwald. It was decided to lay down" a new pitch, the arrangements being left in the hands of' the committee. Magistrate's Court. Judgment for plaintiff by • default was given in respect of the following civii claims'by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., yesterday:—Reynolds and Son v. S'. J. Beaven, £2 2s 6d; National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd. v. W*Fitzgerald, £2l 16s Bd. At a sitting of tho. Juvenile Court a boy, aged 12 years, was charged with entering the premises of Vessey and stealing therefrom the sum of is 6d. He was ordered to-be privately whipped with four strokes of the birch, and was placed on probation for one year. He was ordered to reirain from- attending pictures during, the period. - The Probation Officer was instructed -to make- stringent conditions.
