At a smoke concert held last week at a hamlet near Te Kuiti, a local celebrity was called on to propose the toast of "The Press." As befitting 6uch an important toast, he left his seat at the well-filled tables, and mounted the stage in order to do the ioart full justice. The audience was obviously impressed, and the silence was profound, till the proposer, with arm upraised,, solemnly declainifea, ' 'Gentlemen, the Press is mightier than the pen." When the laughter had'subsided, the speaker was urged to continue. but seamed to think something had g<nv» wrong, aid returned to liis seat. .
