TIMARU. Social and Personal. Mr G. J. Lancaster, headmaster of the Christ church Boys' High School, will reuru to Christchurch to-day. Dr. W. E. Gibson is at present in Christchurch. Mrs Unwin, Church street, returned from Christchurch yesterday. Mr 11. Pring has returned to Timaru after a holiday in Auckland. Mr T. Andrew is visiting Christchurch. Mrs P. J. Kollcston returned from Christchurch yesterday. Mr Mrs, and Misses Giles motored back from Christchurch yesterday. Presentation. The Rev. 11. W. Smith, assistant ! priest of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Timaru, has been appointed by Archbishop Julius to the position of chaplain to the Christchurch Hospital. Last evening in St. Mary's schoolroom a ' social evening and presentation were tendered to Mr and Mrs Smith. Archdeacon Julius presided. In making v the presentation, which consisted of a wallet of notes, Mr M. J. Kimbloy paid a high tribute to Mr Smith's work in the church. St. Mary's was losing an excellent priest who had made himself popular, and who had helped immeasurably in tho general work of the church. Mr' Smith's scholarly sermons had made a lasting impression on his congregations. He had great pleasure in asking the guest to accept the wallet as a mark of appreciation from the church people. Archdeacon Julius and Archdeacon Jacob also spoke in highly eulogistic terms of Mr Smith's period as assistant priest at St. Mary's. Mr Smith replied suitably on behalf of his wifo and himself. An enjoyable pro* gramme of vocal items was contributed to by Mrs P. W. Rule, Mrs Wheeler, and Mr George Andrews. Refreshments were handed round by the ladies. General Ne^ws. Mr A. D. Dobson, of Christchurch, who has been engaged by the Timaru Harbour Board to make a report on the best moans of further improving the harbour, mado a start with the work of inspection on Monday. The municipal 'bus receipts for the twelve days ended August 18th, totalled £239. " . The Ski-ing Carnival at Mount Cook was a great success. Results of the contests were as follows: —New Zealand Championship, men, W. Geddes; ladies, Miss G. Peacock. Winners of other events were:—A. C. McArthur, Mrs McArthur, and Miss Geddes. Over 60 guests are present. There are indications from the North Island that Eddie Parker, tho Timaru boxer, has onco more been disappointed in connexion with the middleweight championship, at present held by Jack Heeney, of Gisborne. Heeney called off a meeting arranged for Timaru in June, having received damage to an ear in a bout with -Brian McCleary. Recently tho Gisborne Association arranged a match to take place in Pov--1 erty Bay, and.»Parker is at present in Hastings, where he has been preparing for the fight. It is how stated that Heeney has injured ono of his hands, and ha a been ordered not to fight for ten weeks. Au endeavour is being made to secure Cadman as an opponent for Parker m Heeney's place. Port of Timaru. Shipping movements at tho Port of Timaru will be found in the shipping columns. TEMUKA. The first meeting of the Technical School Board, as newly constituted, was held in the Technical Schoolroom on Monday evening. Present: Messrs C. B. Cartwright (chairman), M. H. McLeod, Geo. Thompson, P. Sanders, and G. "W. Arnntage, and. Mr J. T. Smart (Director). The Director stated that satisfactory prices had been received for new carpenters' benches and vyces,' and all details would be sent without delay to the Department for approval or otherwise. The. chairman was reappointed visitor. Dr. Hilgendorr notified his willingness to give a lecture later on. A meeting of tho committee, of the Temuka Football Club was held in the Pire Brigade Room" on Monday evening. Mr G. H. Clements was voted to tho chair. It was decided that , children under twelve years be admit- : ted to the grounds free on the occasion : of the match against the Wairarapa football team, provided they assemble at the school before'l.3o p.m. A letter from Mr H. M. Chappell, hon. secretary, North Canter uury Football Club, Kangiora, stated that it had been decided that the fourth grade should play Temuka, at Temuka, en Thursday, September 13th, provided that day would suit. The secretary said ho had seen Mr Ben, and, acting on his advice, had written accepting the offer. The secretary's action was approved. It was agreed that owing to the heavy programme already arranged', the To. muka Club will not be able to play a return match at Rangiora this year, Uonations of £T Is from Mr George Lee and £1 from Mr G. B. Ca:twriglic wore acknowledged with thanks. The following letter was read fr«m Mr T. D. Burnett, member for the district: —Would you please convey to the president and committee of the Temuka Football Clab that I am ready to give £'d(J towards the putchase of medals and trophies to be competed for at tho Temuka football tournament on September Gth, conditional on r (1) That the tournament be thrown open to all club teams between llangitata and Waitaki, wjth the exception of school teams, which will only be drawn from schools in the Temuka electorate. (2) That the Temuka Football Club take from the gate-money £2O to reimburse itself for necessary tournament outgoings, and that the balance of the gate-money be divided up equally among the Boys' Ilome, Park, Library, and Technical School. Please assure the committee that if this year's tournament is a success, I intend to make my donation an annual aifair, provided that the tournament is held in succession at Geraldine, Fairlie, and Pleasant Point. The donation is given in tho interest of improved football, and on the suggestion of several keen enthusiasts ot the game." On the motion of Mv Boyle, Mr Burnett's oifc- was accepted with thanks. The following schools- notified that they -would enter teams: —Orari. Geraldine. SVaihi. and Pleasant Point and Geraldine ' Club. On the suggestion of Mr J. T. Tho following is the draw for the semi-finals: —Senior: Pulton v. Laing, Brierley v. Olliver, jun., Nash v. Harrison, Hassall v. winner, and Borrio v. Hutchinson. GERALDINE. Charges of theft were preferred against two men at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when Mr B. K. Maodonald, J.P., occupied tho Bonch. Joseph Nolan and J. E. Brown wore charged with stealing two hams, ono side of bacon, one bag of onions, and fivo dozen eggs, the property of John Birr, farmer, of Winchester. They wore likewise charged with the wilful destruction of property valued at £2 10s. On the application of the police the accused were reminded till next Monday, bail being allowed each in £lO, with one surety of a like amount.
