THE NEW MAGISTRATE.
MR H. P. LAWRY'S APPOINTMENT CONFIRMED. (SPECIAL TO "THJ *BM8.") WELLINGTON, July 13. Mr H. P. Lawry, barrister and solicitor, practising at Eeofton, has been appointed by the Government to the office of Stipendiary Magistrate, with headquarters on the West Coast. Recently Mr E. W. Burton, Stipendiary Magistrate, resigned through ill-health. This left ,a vacancy, which has now been filled by Mr Lawry's appointment. Tho new appointment carries with it the duties of warden also. Mr Lawry will take tho place of Mr Maunsell, wfco was transferred from Westport to Nelson some months ago. The new magistrate is the eldest son of the Rev. S. Lawry, of Christchurch. He was born at Christchurch in 1883 and received his secondary education at Prince Albert College, Auckland. In 1899 he matriculated and passed his solicitor's general knowledge examination, and began his study of law in Palmerston North. He came to Christchurch in 1004, and completed his law studies at Canterbury College. He was admitted as a solicitor at Christchurch in 3.905, when he passed. his final examinations. Ho was then in business with Messrs Wynn-Williams and Brown since known as Wynn-Williams, Brown' and Gresson. In 190G Mr Lawry went to Reef ton, where he took charge of the legal business of the firm of Free and Cotterell. Mr Free was subsequently appointed a Magistrate at Mast.erton, and Mr Lawry took over the business from him. He has been in active practice at Reefton for the past seventeen years, and has mado a specialty of legal work connected with the mining industry. It was stated in yesterday's issue of "The Press" that it was understood on the West Coast that Mr LawTy had been appointed a Magistrate.
