Eeference to the proposed Heathcote War Memorial was made at last night's meeting of the Heathcote County Council. Cr. B. Biley reported that he had conferred with the chairman of the Memorial Committee regarding the question of site. That which had been selected was most unsuitable ai, should the Railway Department ev<r require to make use of the land in the vicinity, the memorial would be in the way, especially since the county would have only a twelve feet approach to it Before proceeding with the work of erection, permission to use tho site should first be obtained from the Railway Department. It was decided to wait for a reply from the Department regarding its attitude before going ahead with the work. The winning of the "soccer" football "rubber," Australia v. New Zealand, by the visitors shows how "soccer" has progressed in the evergreen islands, aays the "Sydney Daily Telegraph." Twenty years ago, about the time of the first All Black team's British tour, New Zealand was practically a one-game country, and tho game was Rugby. Since then other winter games, such as "soccer" and hockey, have come to tho fore. Whether in this fact will be found the reason why New Zealand was beaten in Bug-by last year by New South Wales, and why New Zealand failed to beat the South Africans, is another question. For a country of its size and population New Zealand shows an amazing amount of athletic energy, and even if Rugby may have suffered by decentralisation of that energy it is still just as well not to have all the eggs in one basket. No doubt New Zealand will try hard to win back the Rugby ashes from the New South Wales team that is. about to tour New Zealand. This season's Maori Rugby team went home without a win, but its play was nevertheless admirable, and the more to be admired when it is remembered that the Maori race ia a mere handful in number, some 50,000. Only a race of fine physiquo and also character could maintain so high & standing in the athletic world.

It is anticipated that a report will be submitted to Monday's meeting of the Tramway Board. The Canterbury cross-country championship, which was to have been contested at Cashmere to-day, has been postponed until next Saturday on account of the bad state of the track. The inaugural address which was to have been given by Mr A. T. Donnelly to the newly-formed Law Students' Societv at Canterbury College to-night, has had to be postponed'till next Saturday, owing to Mr Donnelly's indisposition. The honorary medical staff has recommended to the Otago Hospital Board (telegraphs our correspondent) that the scope of the radium and X-ray department of the hospital be enlarged by the installation of an emanation outfit, by means of which suitable cases in the district could be more effectively treated. The cases from other parts or the Dominion could also be treated m their own towns by tho medium of emanation tubes manufactured here and despatched to the .places where they aro required by the above means. The medical staff points out that a properly equipped Dominion Radium Institute would be located at Dunedin, and a just claim could be made for financial support for the other centres. The staff recommends that a fresh appeal be made for funds to provide for the additional equipment and accommodation required, and suggests that the sum of £SOOO be asked for which, with the Government subsidv, would make the total £11,250. A scheme to improve the Dyer's Pass road was suggested at last night's meeting of the Heatheote County Couacil by Or. A. F. Smith. A letter w.->.*> received from the B.S.A. asking if th*i Council would accept £IOO from the Poppy Day funds and subsidise it with a similar amount, with a view to providing work for returned soldiers. Cv. Smith said that a member of the Council had conferred with representatives of the Canterbury Automobile Association, and the suggestion had been made that the offer bo accepted by the Council, which should find £IOO, the. Association being responsible _ for a similar amount. An application could then bo made to the Government through Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., for a subsidy of £2OO. Should this be forthcoming, the sum of £450 would be available for improving the Dyer's Pass road on the City side, part of which was at present impassable. He mentioned that the Government was now engaged in improving the road on the Governor's Bay Bide. The scheme was approved, and it was decided to write to the Automobile Association for its promisod donation, and to ask Mr Isitt to endeavour to get a Government subsidy. There was a large attendance of interested spectators at Messrs Adams, Ltd.'s showrooms last eVenmg, when the United States Government's magnificent cinematograph record, "ihe Story of an Automobile," was shown for the first time in .New Zealand. Tinswonderful industrial film was made at the great new factory of the Studebaker Corporation in which the famous ''Economy Light Six" is produced, and every process "in manufacture is shown clearly and completely. The big showroom was converted for the occasion into a picture theatre, and points that found favour with those were the fact that the room was well lighted, even during the screening, and that the picture was very large and very bright. Of interest also was the display of Studcbaker cars of all the new 1923 models, and especially the revolving golden chassis, a ' 'Light Six" stripped chassis, finished in white and gold, and so nicelv balanced on trunnions that a child could turn it, facilitating convenient inspection of all mechanical details. Patrons of last evening's entertainment were outspoken in their praises of the film, which is certainly the best industrial record of its sort ever made, and they were interested also in the actual examples shown of the work which the factory turns out. "The Story of an Automobile" will be shown again this evening at half-past seven, and every evening next week, -t the same time, up till Friday. Admission is free, and motorists, their friends and families and others interested in the latest developments in automobile engineering are cordially invited to attend any session. ADAMS, LTD. N.Z.
