J If a comparison wore made of the salaries paid to officers of the Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Duncdin ,City Councils, said the Mayor or Wellington. Mr R. A. Wright, M.P., while speaking to a "Post" reporter on Thursday, it would bo. found that Wellington was , a little lower than Auckland, and about on an equality witii Christchurch and Dunedin. No increases had been to members of the Wellington City Council staff since 1920. when there was a general increase, but reports received from the various departments hrd recommended certain increases, and after those reports had been considered by the committees of the Council' the attitude taken up was that it was only fair to grant increments. In reference to the granting of increases to heads of departments, Mr Wright stated that the 1920 Council when retiring from office recommended those increases by formal resolution, but that recommendation had not been giveri effect to until the- Council reached its decisions on Monday night. Included among those officers were those who would in the meantime carry on the work of the late City Engineer, Mr W. H. Morton.
