Excellent music was supplied by" Mr and Mrs F. Breach. During the evening a guessing competition for a cushion was won by Mr A. W. Smith. An excellent supper was arranged in the Lodge's new hall in High street. The Rangiora School Committee met on Wednesday night, Mr H. A. Archdall presiding. The headmaster reported that the roll number _was 391. and the average attendance 353. The average for the quarter ending June 30th was 352, as compared with 294 for I the same quarter last year. The Uepartment's physical instructors visited i the school during the month, and ex- • pressed satisfaction with the work of the various drill squads. Iu moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said it was very satisfactory to , notice the large increase in the school j roll. The report was adopted. It ' was resolved to approve of the action of tltf) master in closing the school owing to the decreased attendance through influenza. After further consideri ation of the matter, however, the permission was withdrawn. i The quarterly meeting of the Rangiora Methodist Church was held on Wednesday, the Rev. A. N. Scotter, 8.A., presiding. Tlie circuit stewards . presented the balance-sheet, which showed a debit for the quarter. It was resolved to make a special appeal to wipe out the deficiency. Satisfactory reports were received from the various Sunday schools and young people's societies The chairman reported that the home mission effort was nearing completion. Motions of sympathy in their illness were passed to Mrs Mutter (Amberley), Messrs P. Thorne and Brooker (Sefton), and J. Skevington (Rangiora). At the close of the meeting refreshments were provided by tlio Indies. . A meeting of the Rangiora Borougn and* Country Soldiers' War Memorial Committee was held last night. Present : the Mayor (Mr W. A. Tlovse) and i Messrs C I. Jennings, F. Horrell, C. N. Ayres. H. Garrett, A. Mcintosh, and W. C Prosser. A number of designs for a memorial were received, and that of Mr G. R. J. Hearn, of Christchuroh. was unanimously accepted. Tenders for the erection of the memorial are to be called immediately and the work is I to be completed in six months of the acceptance of tender. i

SOUTHBRIDGE. In spite of the inclement weather conditions there was a, very good attendance at the Town Hall on the occasion of the annua] hall held undc-r the auspices of the Loyal Orange Lodge Xo. 17. The result must have been extremely gratifying to the Lodge officials, and to the enthusiastic secretary, Mr J. 11. Hampton, whose efforts and tho work of those associated with him were well rewarded. The grand march w;us led by Bro. E. C. McJarrow and Miss Croat. The decorations reflected credit on the artistic, taste of the ladies and Lodge j members responsible. -Mr R. Hampton | was M.C., and Mr Woiis-'s Rand sup- j plied the music. An excellent supper was served.

For the past week the weather in this district has been wintry indeed. The rain has made everything appear very miserable, while paddocks are under water, and the ground gonerally is sodden. A great deal of sickness has been prevalent in the district, and although whole families have suffered from slight influenza, it has not yet warranted the elosintr of the school. Tn soite of the inclement weather on Thursday evening, the dance organised by the young men of the district was well attended. Air BettePs band supplied the music, and Mir H. Sylvester made an efficient M.C. LEESTON. At the monthly meeting of the Town Board, the following members were present:—Commissioners A. J. Gray (chairman), Dr. B. Volckman, F. Townshend, W. Johnston, and Geo. Rodgers, An apology for absence was received from Mr R. McConneil, on account of indisposition. The clerk reported that the Methodist Church authorities had decided to cut down the pine trees on the church property fronting Selwyn street, and to cut back the other trees, Mr Win. Brown wrote stating that he was building a house in Selwyn street and had sunk a well, but the soakage from a septic tank on the adjoining property would reach the wells. The drainage from Penlingloi; si reel was another matter requiring attention. The chairman commented that the health authorities should deal with Hie matter as they had allowed the installation of the tank. Mr Rodgers said tlie tank was of concrete, and there was no soakage from it. It was decided that tlie matter be dealt with at the next, meeting. Mr Jas. Lamliie wrote asking fur an outlet to be given for the water on his property. Mr Johnston reported having inspected the locality, a good part of which was under water. The Works Committee was instructed to furnish a report.
