Technical School Board. annual m eting of the AshburE*» Technical School Board was held grtsy afternoon. Present —Messrs *«d (chairman), R. Galbraith, W.

G. Hilller, G. W. Andrews, T. Hayes, F. Smallbone. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £1092 8s sd, including £714 lis 9d on deposit. A letter was read from the Director of Education drawing attention to the fact that in future claims for subsidies must be submitted to the Do partment for approval prior to the expenditure. Mr Caughley also wrote stating that a free place awarded by the principal of the Technical School was not accer,f"d as a qualification for a pupil teach-Tship or a probationer, though in a few exceptional cases, when _ the course of instruction and the subjects taken had been deemed to be satisfactory this point had been waived. A letter was read stating that thd Board would probably re-elect Messrs James Cow and F. W. Wall at tho meeting in August, but Mr R. A. Collins was also willing to act. As this was the last meeting of the Board, the chairman reviewed the year's work, and said it had been one of steady progress and improvement. The director stated that the Government were taking steps to bring in new regulations in regard to compulsory attendance at the school. Mr Hayes, referring to the chairman's services, spoke very highly of what the chairman had done in the interests of technical education, and the businesslike manner in which he had conducted the Board's meetings. He hoped that Mr Reid would be re-elected as chairman by the new Board in August. He moved that a vote of thanks be passed to the chairman for his past services. The motion was seconded by Mr Smallbone and carried, the seconder also highly eulogising the chairman for his valuable services. Mr Hayes, as a member of the Visiting Committee, said he had noticed that a number of the children were suffering from colds, and he suggested that each room should be fumigated. Mr Galbraith supported Mr Hayes '* suggestion, and the matter was left with Mr Hillier, who had offered to lend a Bprayer and supply other material. Messrs Hillier and Smallbone were appointed a Visiting Committee. Tho director warmly thanked the chairman and the other members of the Board for their attitude towards the school during the past year. It was one of the best Boards he had ever been brought in contact with They were always easily approached, and carried out any suggestions which might be made.
