BOROUGH COUNCILS.
KAIAPOI. The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held last night. Present- The Mayor (Mr H. (Mcintosh), Crs. W B Scott, E. H. Forest, F. Thome, A. Gordon, J. Bryden, K. S. .Joyce, H. C. Kevell, M. Bawsay, and J. Hunt. The Hon. D. Buddo, M.P., forwarded a letter received from the Superintendent, of state Advances Department relating k. the erection of '.houses in kaiapoi, and pointing out that a Bill had been introduce.', into the House for the purpose of widen, ng the scope of the workers' section ot the btate Advances Act, which provided that worxera could acquire homes on much easier terms. The correspondence was received', anti it was decided tliut the Finance Committee, should obtain further information w:tli reference to a housing scheme for tiie borough and report to the next meeting. Mr Buddo also advised with reference to the planting of marram grass on the Crown land adjacent to the Borough's seaside reserve, that lie would draw the attention of the Minister of Public Works to the matter and urge that the work should be carried out. The Minister of Public Works wrote acknowledging- receipt of correspondence with reference to the same matter, and advised that it would receive c-arcful consideration. The Lighting Committee reported, with reference to alterations in the Borough reticulation, and recommended the Council yard as the most suitable site for the central transformer and that the route for the high tension wire should be along Ravon street to the north side of Raven street bridge, thence along Bridge street to the Cam bridge and along Walker street to Ranfurly street, and that a smaller transformer should ~be placed in that locaJity. The committee also recommended the installation of meters, and that it bo empowered to proceed with making- ths necessary enquiries for the raising of a loan to meet the cost of the work as suggested. The report was adopted. On tho recommendation of the Works Committee, it was decided that repairs should be carried out to the river embankments in Sidey Quay and HiltoS-street west, and also that as soon, rb the approaches to th? newCam bridge weTe completed the bridge be opened to traffic. The Mayor wias appointed the Council's representative on the Board of Management of the Kaiapoi Technical classes. The financial statement showed—Receipts since last meeting, £153 9s 2d; debit bank balance, £23 13s ICd.
