THE ROBINSON PICTURES.
INTENTIONS OF THE OWNER. (bt cable— press AnsociATioar—copthight.) (AUSTRALIAN AKD N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION) LONDON, July 8. In connexion with the 6ale of Sir Joseph Robinson's pictures it is reported that Sir Joseph stored them in 1912, and did not see them again till they were ranged on the walls at Christie's for sale. Using a wheeled chair, Sir Joseph went round the gallery. He was so struck with tho beauty of the pictures that he felt he could not part with them, and decided to retain the best. Connoisseurs from all parte of Europe and America were crowding the rooms, unaware that many of the successful bids were from agents acting on Sir Joseph's own behalf. A New York buyer secured most of the other pictures. All the pictures showed big advances on the prices paid by Sir Joseph Robinson. A pathetic feature of the sale was the number of members of well-known aristocratic families attending the 6ale to get a glimpse of pictures that were • once family possessions. Some women were overheard saying: "We can remember that picture. It was in our house when we were girls." After the sale Sir Josepli Robinson told a "Sunday Express" representative: "I have big intentions for the balance of the pictures, numbering 170 and worth several millions. I intend to lease a gallery and let the publio see them. Under certain legal entailments, long since drawn up, they will pass to my heirs. In the mellow light of Christie's they looked so beautiful that I could not part with them."
