GORED BY A BULL.
DEATH OF FARM LABOURER. . An inquest coifceniing the death of Edward Evans, & farm labourer aged about 65 years, who died on Thursday from injuries received by being gored by a bull, was held yesterday oy the Coroner, Mr H. Y. Widdowsoa Sergeant A. G. Quartermain conducted the enquiry. Arthur Edmund Amyes, dairy farmer of Lakeside, said EVans had been working at his farm for six weeks prior to his death. Deceased had worked in various parts of the EUesmere County, and he was a general farm labourer. He was a reserved man and nobody knew much about him. The accident occurred at about 10 o'clock. "My wife heard Evans call out," said witness, "and we ran out of the house to see what was the matter. I saw the bull in an excited state on one side of the fence, and Evans was on the other, about 200 yards from the house. The fence is a high boxthorn one. The paddock is ploughed, and I saw the marks where the bull had struck him, and also the marks in. the hedge where he had crawled through. When I got to Evans he was on his hands and knees. I helped him up and got him into the housa and sent my wife to ring up the doctor. Evans could not speak coherently and he had been badly gored." Witness stated that Doctors Vblkmann. and Ick-Hewins attended Evans, and at once ordered bis removal to the Hospital. Witness brought him to Chnstchurch in his car, where he arrived at 10 o'clock. There was no delay in admitting the man to the Chnstchurch Hospital, but he waa dead when taken to a ward. The Coroner: Is that bull always at hbertv?—He usually has a chain on mm, but recently he managed to get it off, and I haven't found it since. He is a pedigree Shorthorn bull. ' I understand you shot the bull?— >es. I got a neighbour to shoot it for me. "Evans' trousers were torn to pieces." said witness, "and the injury seemed to be in the small of the back. Tiiere did not seem to be an open wound, but a big black bump was noticeable One leg was cut and skin had been taken off the other William James tfairn, farmer of Lakeside, said he had known the deceased for about 23 vears. Evans' age wa3 probably between 55 and 60. He was single. Witness accompanied Evans to the Hospital, and he was alive tfhen the car arrived there. Ho did not appear to be dying. The- inquest waa then adjourned shea die.
