Mr James Carson, who died at Wai- I kouaiti recently, was one of the oldest and most highly respected residents in the district. Ho was bora in Helensburgh, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, on August loth, 1835. and came out to New Zealand in the ship Sevilla, which arrived in 1859. He wa« married in November, 1863, and is survived by his wife and nine children, four eons and five daughters. He and 15 other members were the first to attend the Oddfellows' Lodge which was opened at Waikouaiti on August 29th, 1866, and he was the last of the original members. A short time after his arrival in Dunedin ho went to Waikouaiti to assist in the building of stores for the late Mr John Jones, and resided there till ha died with the exception of a short period when he was present at the Gabriel's Gully rush. . :
