COLLEGE V. HIGH SCHOOL.
TO THE MHTOB OJ "THB PBSBS." Sir,—rl never thought that the day would come when I would, on a question of school policy, differ from the dear old Head who so kindly swished me in my youth, nor do I think there are many points on which I would oppose .the present Head; but with all diffidence I submit that both Mr Corfo and Mr Crosse are in the wrong in regard to the playing of the above match. The hired gladiator stunt is all moonshine. If those boys go on some of them will play for their provinco or their country. Some, if they go Home, may play for their University or for England. Those who have played in this game will have got over the nervousness that is caused by. a first appearance before a largo crowd. As regards the money, I think it a perfectly fair thing to help the games fund from the gate. No one is quite as well off as he used to be, and the relief of parents in the way of contributions , must often bo acceptable. Canterbury College • helps its games funds from the profits of its theatrical entertainments . I see no difference. The College-High School match is becoming a historic fixture like Eton v. Harrow, or the boat race. The cricket match is not played at Windsor, nor is tho race rowed on the Tyue, but where those interested can with least discomfort view the contest. It was grand yesterday to meet fellows who had not seen a football match for a year—fine hairy chaps that one remembers in the Lower School. Mr Crosse, fears that the adulation of the first fifteen leads to swelledheadedness. It will to a certain extent whether the boy plays on Lancaster Park or on' the school ground, but a certain amount is perfectly natural, for every boy hopes to get his colours. If it gets too bad Mr Crosse has a remedy in his cupboard—at least there was in my day.—Yours, °'' J. S. BARRETT.
