Clarke, C.A., and Mr William Ferguson, engineer and manager of the Wellington Gas Company, have been appointed as the two additional members of the Committee of Investigation set up by the shareholders of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company to report on the company's affairs. Mr J. 0. HarwoocT, who has held the position of clerk in the Dunedin office of the Marine Department for tho past seven years, has been promoted to tho accountancy branch at headquarters, Wellington. Mr Harwood served with the New Zealand troops on Gallipoli, and was wounded. He entered the borvice of the Marine Department after being invalided home. A celebrated Scottish dancer is now on his way from tho Old Country to Dunedin, and has been engaged by the Dunedin Competitions Society to adjudicate in the national dancing sections at the festival" there in September. The celebrity referred to is Mr Duncan MacLennan. He has done a lot of judging at Home, and was appointed to represent Scotland in the dancing at tho coronation of King George. Mr MacLennan is also an exponent of the latest styles of ballroom dancing. It is likely that he will stay some time in Dunedin. Mr H. W. Lawson, who was for 10 years manager of tho Auckland branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, has retired from the service of the bank, owing to ill-health. The Board of Directors has cabled expressing appreciation of Mr Lawson's long ana valuable sorvices, and tho hope that | freedom from the cares of office will .speedily restore him to better health. Mr Lawson entered tho service of tho National Bank in 1579, joining the staff at Wellington. Six year 3 later he was transferred to Auckland. For 20 years Mr Lawson was an accountant, and for two years held the position of invspoctor. He was appointed manager in 1913. Captain Alister F. Beal has been appointed to H.M.S. Chatham as Com-modore-in-command of the New Zealand station, and as Naval Adviser to the Government; in succession to Commodore Alan G. Hotham. Captain Beal arrives about the middle of August. Mr A. J. Harrop a member of the reporting staff of "Tho Press," leaves to-night for Wellington, en route for Cambridge University, where he will undertake a course in literary research work. Yesterday Mr Harrop was met ... by membors of the editorial and sub'editorial staffs and his colleagues on the reporting staff, and was mado the recipient of a set of military brushes and a gold-mounted pencil. The editor, Mr M. C. Keano, in making the presentation, expressed his regret at Mr Harrop's departure. He hoped that Mr Harrop, although going Home primarily to study, would not be lost to journalism. His colleagues on "The. Press", would follow his future career with great interest and with sincere good wishes for his success. In acknowledging the gifts, Mr Harrop returned thanks, and expressed his appreciation of tho opportunities affordj ed him by "The Press" of gaining i an invaluable experienco of journalism.

Mr T 11. Herd who has been appointed Assistant Comptroller of Customs in succession to Mr G. Craig, has had a distinguished omcial career. He received his early education at the iioys ttigh School, Dunedin, and after passing the Public fcfervico entrance examination second on the-list he was ill 1890 appointed to a cadetship in the ■Treasury Department; later m the same year ho was trnsferred to tne Customs Department. In 1896 he was made shipping clerk in the Cnnstchurch branch, and in 1898 was appointed an examining officer at Aucklirnd. In 1901 he was appointed Ooi- . lector and Postmaster at Earotonga, a Position he retained until 1905, when 'he returned to his duties as exammg officer, and was stationed at "j* 11 " 1 ?- ton. In 1912 he was appointed Collector at Grcymouth, and two years .later was promoted to the position ot chief clerk in the head office. After holding this position for five years he Ms transferred to London as omciai tepresentativo of the Customs -Departaent there. Mr Herd's ability and the experience he has had m the Government Service-are expected to ensure his success in the position to which he ' ;has now been appointed.
