Foreman plays Tait, NEW CLUB AT HAREWOOD. ,A new golf club, to be known as- the llarewood Club, was inaugurated at & meeting of golf players held on wao decided ta make a nine-hole course at first -and to limit the membership at ono hundred, of which number the first eixtyfive have been admitted *s foundation mombsra. Mr A. K. B.ank occupied the choir, 3nd there was a good attendance of players. The chairman eaid that the idea of forming the new club was mooted about throe weeks ago, when a few enthusiast* met together and formed the club and e9t up *> provisional committee Mr George Shipley, who hed a lease of 600 acres -. at Harcwood,. where an excellent course, could bs made, had agreed to let the club take over a portion of the'land from him on very favourable terms. His offer was to let the club have the course freo of charge ■ for the first year, and to make a charge of £25 a year for the following sis years, subject to Mr Shipley retaining tho erasing rights. The provisional committee' had decided to accept Mr Shipley's offer and to go ahead with the club. Mr.Shipley had cut the fairwayß, and during l the past two weeks a. man,had been employed clearing up, with the' result that the course was practically ready to be playtd upon. The committee had adopted the rules of the Chriatchurch 01ub> with certain modifications. The number of _ members already was seventy-two, and it wob for tho meeting l to decide whether tho membership should be limited. . The provisional committee had called for tenders for a email pavilion, and the loweat tender received was £fl6. The land wao leased, from the Waimakariri. River Tiuat, and' the leas© was put uj> for auction every seven years. •■;-'•"• Tha chairman mentioned' that Mr Deny* Hoare had kindly offered to undertake- th« secretarial duties until th» club made other arrangements. On the motion bi Mr M, H-. Godby, it was decided to approve of the formation of the Harewood Golf Clttb> and to «pr prove of the steps taien by the prcvieional committee, aa outlined by the chairman. At the monthly meeting of th«; Council, of tho New Zealand Golf Association, held at Wellington, Uwo member* of ; the Professional Golfers' Aflseciation wrote with r«sard to .the .question of amatur golfera being directly concerned in: tho aalo of golf materials in competitions with the professionals. ' After ft full discussion it was resolved that whilst the Council sympathised with them in the fact .that• they had <H>mp6tition- of this kind, it was of tho opinion" that there was no breaking of the amateur status in tho circumstances quoted in the letter.
