EARLY RECORDS.
COLLECTION AND PKESERVA- : TION. A proposal- to take in hand the task of collecting and preservingg early records of Canterbury was adopted by tne executive committee of the Canterbury Progress League last night. Mr A. G. Henderson moved: "That the Mayor of Christchurch and the organiser be appointed a subcommittee to collect and preserve the records of early Canterbury, and that Dr. Hight, Mr A. Dudley Dobson, and Mr E. J. Bell should be invited to join the committee, such committee to have power. to add to its number." Mr Henderson said that before it was too late the work of collecting and preserving early records sflould be carried out adequately and methodically. Mr W. Goss said it vras.a (jreat pitythat the work of collecting early records had not been started long ago.
IVlr J. H. Blackwell said the committee could secure the assistance of correspondents .in various districts. Afl far as North Canterbury was concerned much valuable information could be secured from Mr J. Lowthian Wilson, of Kaiapoi. Mr N. M. Orbell said he heartily approved of the proposal. In Otago some very excellent . work was being achieved by the Early Settlers'.Association in the matter of securing; records. Mr Henderson's motion was; carried.
