Mr P. S. Cabot, an ex-pupil of the i Timaru Boys' High School, has been elected vice-president of the Otago [T-'niversity Students' Association. At present he also holds the presidency of [the Arts Faculty, and last year was [president of the Dunedin Training j College.

1 Mr and Mrs Allan Gillingham (Fairi lie) are the guests of Mrs L. L. Miles (Wai-iti road). Miss Stewart ("Clover Hill") returned from Auckland yesterday, and is spending a few days in Timaru. Automobile Association. South Canterbury Automobile Association and the Timaru Borough Council each employed an official on Friday last to direct car owners, when parking their cars in Sophia and Perth streets, and the same officials will do similar duty to-morrow. The great majority of motorists appreciate what was done for them in this way, but some took it amiss, and it .is intended to hand the names of all who fail to park their cars in the proper way to the police. Soldiers' Memorial. Samples of marble for the column of the Soldiers' Memorial "in Timaru are being received from various parts of New Zealand as well as from Australia and Italy. When all the samples are to hand the Memorial Committee will make a selection. The column will be the largest of its kind in Australasia, and the marble cap, which will be 60 feet from the ground, will weigh five tons and take about six months to carve. Magistrate's Court. Eobert Eussell pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and also to a charge of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr E. D. Mosley S.M. On the first charge he was convicted and discharged and on the second was fined £3 in default one month's imprisonment. He was allowed a fortnight in which to find the money. Judgment for defendant by default was given in each of ths following cases': —Priest and Holdgate v. Bay-1 mond Geaney £4 7s 8d and £1 4s 6d costs; same v. W.,T. Greenall 10s and 8s costs. .

G. H. Clark (Mr W. D. Campbell) applied for an order for posseasion of a house in Harper street at present occupied by A. Woods (Mr J. P. Steven). George Henry Clark gave evidence that he had had to leave his farm in Washdyke'and come in to town owing to his wife's illness. He had bought a house in Harper street in which defendant was rasiding. He could not get defendant out of the house and had to buy a second house in Seaview terrace. He had taken a second mortgage on the farm he had sold, hut the interest on the mortgage had not been paid. Witness had to work as e gardener to keep himself and his family, but 18 months or" two years ago he had contracted blood poisoning and had been able to do very little work. Now in order to meet debts he had to sell the house in Seaview terrace and go into residence in the Harper street house. Andrew Woods said that since receiving notico to quit he had endeavoured to find another house, but could not find one to suit him. Witness had offered to buy the house from plaintiff for £llsO, but the offer had not been accepted. The Magistrate made, an order giving plain tiff possession of the residence in Harper street, the warrant to lie on the Magistrate's table in the meantime. The warrant would not be issued until he was sure the Seaview terrace residence had been sold. A Smart Arrest. At Temuka on Tuesday afteracoa, Constable Simister, of Temuka, received a complaint of several petty thefts committed in Temuka during the past few days, and traced them to two men whom he had already warned to at onco leave the town. Up till late on Tuesday evening the men could not be located, although they had been traced in several directions. They were, however, run to earth on the Winchester road between 7 and 8 o'clock yesterday morning. • William George Pollock and Frederick Simpson Thompson pleaded guilty to three charges of larceny of a number of articles which they had succeeded in converting into cash, the money being subsequently spent in drink. Measra W. P. Evans and G. H. Gapper, J.P.'s, were on the bench. The men were convicted and sentenced to onu month's imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. Juvenile Court. Three children appeared at the Juvenile Court yesterday charged with not being under proper control. After investigating their cose, the Magistrate committed two of the children to the Caversham Industrial Receiving Homo, the youngest being allowed to stay in the parents' care under probation.
