At the meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday the engineer reported as follows, in regard, to the recent heavy "range" in th« inner harbour, which caused eoine damage to thu Boards property:

■: The question of excessive range in the inner haotoiir arises frota.time to time, when seas axe heavy, on tho coast, and it used to be suggested that the construction of the reclamation mole increased such range. I do not think that the reclamation mole has anything to do with it, and I atn not- sure that the range tc-day. is greater than it used to be, but if it is, I am of opinion that such increase ib due to the dredging of the .entrance channel and of the inner harbour. 'l'bo usual devices for the reduction of range in a harbour are wave trap's to intercept and diflßipate the'waves, sometimes in the form of short spurs of piling immediately inside the entrance; but there is no room in our harbour for such, as in the only pkeds where they would have any effect, they would interfere with navigation. The only practical reducing' the' range in our har-bour-are:—'■'■•'

(1)-Ah extension of tho eastern.breakwater in the form of a. spur from the bend, in continuation of the long straight part, (2) A further mole from Sticking Point in a southerly direction extending: to the present dredged entrance channel.. , ' The "first expedient would require about 16-2,850 tons of atone, and would coat about £81,425. It would reduce the range by about one-third. The second expedient would require . about 510.C00 tons of stone, and would cost about £200,000. It would reduce the range by.about Another third, and would also form part of any plan for extensions t& the port.:. If a further island breakwater were constructed southward of the dredged channel and extended eonthward for about 1100 ft,. the, range Would be almost entirely prevented, but there would be a dangerously yapid tadarcurrent through the new entrance thua .formed. On the whole, I could not adrise anything further than the spur to the prewar breakwater, at t'hie stage, and" I am .' ™bt/whother.eren. this is pißtifiod ■ The' matter referred to the HarW Improvement Committee. .
