In the House of Commons, in Committeo on the Finance Bill, Sir William Joynson-Hicks, Financial Secretary to tho Treasury, moved the insertion of. a clause to remedy the grievance regarding double income-tax on profits in the shipping business. Ho proposed to take power by Order-in-Council to exempt the profits of foreign shipping businesses, conditional upon reciprocal exemption. Tho clause was agreed to. Sir "William Joynson-Hicks also offered to exempt entrances to the British Empire Exhibition from payment cf the entertainment tax, but withdrew the proposal when Sir Alfred Butt (Conservative, Balham) objected on behalf of the theatres and music-halls, saying that the Exhibition would probably be visited by 30,000,000 to 4.0,000,000 people, and the tax would yield something like £260,000.
