SEWERAGE POLL.

MEETING AT ST. ALBANS. There was a small attendance of St. Albans residents and ratepayers at the St. Albans Young Men's Hall last evening, when Mr Waiter Hill, chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Hoard, explained tlie proposals of the Board to raise £700,000 by loan to provide for tlio sewerago of the outer drainage area. Mr A. Williams occupied tne eliair. Mr Hill expressed regret at-the poor attendance, but said he hoped tnat tiTose who had attended the meeting would do. their utmost to give publicity to the scheme which the Drainage Board had brought forward. He stressed the necessity for the installation of a sewerage system in the outer area, on lines similar to thoso detailed during the course of his address at Eiccarton on the previous evening. Ho went on to explain the scheme which the Board had formulated. Dr. T. F. Telford, Chief Health Officer for Canterbury, emphasised the danger to the health of the community through lack of proper drainage facilities. It was his candid opinion, he said, that if the .loan were.carried the resulting drainage syutem would prove of inestimable benefit from all points of view. Mr J. W. Beanland, a member of the Drainage Board for the outer area, Baid that the cry in the outer area for many years past had been for a sewerage system. If the poll were carried the city would be getting real value for its money, and he felt sure that tho ratepayers would view the matter t'rom that standpoint. • Mr H. J. Otley, deputy-chairman of the Board, said that if the scheme were put into effect it would prove an insurance against disease. He stronglv recommended the residents of St. Albana to vote; in favour of it at the forthcoming poll. • At the conclusion of the meeting a vote of thanks was passed to the speakers, and the meeting decided, to endorse the scheme as outlined by them.' Another meeting will be held in the Beckenham school to-night at 8 o'clock.
