NEIGHBOURS INTERVENE.
ALLEGED CRUELTY TO BABY. (rmsn association txligjuw.) WELLINGTON, July 3. Severely; bruised about the body, and generally showing signs of having been very roughly handled, a. baby girl, two years of age, was brought before Mr E. Page, S.M.. at the Magistrate's Court to-day, in regard to a complaint under the Industrial Schools Act, 1908, that she was not under proper care and control. Senior-Sergeant Lander explained that the baby had been brought to the Central Police Station by some people from Paekakariki, who alleg d that she was being very badly treated. She was taken to Dr. Henry, who gave a certificate (produced) in regard to the child's condition. The certificate showed that the baby's body was a mass of bruises) between the shoulders and the knees, and that she evidently had been mercilessly beaten. The police desired the matter to be adjourned until Saturday, to enable enquiries to be made in regard to the allegations of cruelty. An adjournment until Saturday was granted, the child in the meantime to remain in the Receiving Home.
