WEST COAST NOTES
TIMBER ROYALTIES. (special to "th« pbbss.") GEEYMOUTH, May 23. At the annual meeting of the Grey County Councils the chairman, Mr Hannan," stated that the balance-sheet showed a satisfactory position, which had improved by £ISOO during tho year. The chief difficulty faced was the maintenance of public roads, and. it was essential that timber, royal-/ ties, revenue should be retained. Pressure must be brought to bear on the Government to get vehicular traffic to contribute to the upkeep of the roads. Referring to the necessity'for permits for timber exports, he criticised "the pernicious form of legislation by Order- ' in-Council the- Massey Government seemed fond of." The restrictions were serious for the West*|Coast. He understood that the millers'were sendI ing a deputation to the Government, and the Council should give support to protect its revenue. Messrs J. Hannan and J. Higgins I (engineer) were appointd to represent 1 the Grey Council at the conference of South Island County Councils, to be held at Cliristchurch on June 20th, to consider the Main Highways Bill.
