At Auckland yesterday the GovernorGeneral and Lady Jellicoe entertained wounded soldiers from the Evelyn Firth Home, children from the Hospital, Girl Guides and Hoy Scouts, when a private screening of the film, "Robin Hood," was given at Government House. The entertainment was given in the ballroom, and tea was served afterwards in the dining-room. Miss Lucy Conk (Marton), who came to Christchiirch for the Canterbury 'Collego Jubilee celebrations, is at present' the guest of Mrs C. H. Moreland, P.ipanni road. She intends leaving lor the North on Friday. Lady Ward is the guest of Mr and Mrs Bernard Wood. Mrs C. C. M. OKivier and family arc spending part of the school holidays at the Selwyn Huts. Miss Alice Candy and Miss Ethne Tosswill are spending the vacation at Camp Bay. Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson and Miss Frances Oacroft Wilson are leaving to-morrow for Dimedin. Mr and Mrs Lawrence, sen., and Mrs J. W. K. Lawrence and her children are spending a few weeks at Rakaia Huts. Miss Betty Findlay (Taieri), who has been spanding the last three weeks wit.i Miss ltoreen Hight, left for the South yesterday. Mrs Edward Harris (Cashmere Hills) has returned from a trip to Itotorua. Mrs McKellor and her children, who have been spending the school holidays at the Eakaia Huts, have returned to town? Mrs Norton Franci9 and her children have returned from Timaru. Mrs E. F. J. Grigg and family are the guests of Mrs Grigg, Longbeaeh. Miss Cohen (Wangnnui), who has been' spending a few weeks in Christchurch, left for the North last night. iMiss Bntham, who came to Ohristchurch for the Canterbury' College Jubilee celebrations, returns to Wei lington to-morrow. Mrs A. K. Anderson, who has been spending some weeks in Dunedin, will, accompanied by Mr Anderson, return to Christchurch on Saturday. Mrs Guild (TemukaV has been the, guest of Mrs Rose, Holmwood road; Fendalton. Mr and.Mrs P. M. Warren are leaving Christchurch to-morrow to .spend a few weeks in Australia. Miss Jessie Bingley left last evening to join the nursing staff at St. Helens Hospital,' Wellington. The second term of the Girls' High School will commence on Monday. Air and Mrs G. W. R. Osborne, of Doyieston, have left on a visit to the United States and Canada. Before his departure, Mr Osborne was presented with a travelling rug from the employees of "Winfield." The weekly dance at the Rosemary Jazz Club will be held at the Art Gallery. The music will be provided by lleid's Peerless Orchestra and dancing will continue from eight till twelve., The committee have made the usual complete arrangements for the entertainment of their guestsr. The Canadian Foursome Golf Match, which was postponed, owing to . bad. weather, from last Wednesday, will be played at the Shirley links this afternoon. The, players and their friends will be the guests of Mrs J. E. Donald at afternoon tea, and the hostess hopes that r should the weather again prorve unsuitable for play, the entrants will assemble in full force at the. pa.vilion, where tea will be served and a social afternoon spent. On Monday evening the members of the. Harbour Lights Uub held a peasant little dance in the ray
Dancing Studio for the officers and cadets of the s.s. Waipara. The chaperons were Mesdames J. C. Holmes, 11. Hucks, and W. Brown. Includeu among the guests of the evening were Mrs Dixon (Auckland), Misses Dixon (Auckland), Gray (2). On Saturday evening a pleasant surprise party visited the residence of Mr and Mrs S. Hancock, Lincoln road, Spreydon, where an enjoyable evening was spent with music and games. During the evening a dainty supper was served. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Kirby, Schuitz, Aschoff, Cox, Goodman, and Winfields, Misses Doris Hern, Mary Leathern, Messrs. Kirby (2), Aschoff, Cox, Goodman, Winfield, Hern, Gillespie, and Bateman. The Manchester Unity Oddfellows' Assembly.held another of its fortnightly dances in the St. Asaph street Hall on Monday, when a very pleasant evening was spent. The hall was prettily decorated with mauve and gold streamers, and Mr Reg. orchestra supplied the music. Among the many present were: Mr and Mrs A. L. The members of St. David's Church. Belfast, entertained Miss Q. Halligan at a kitchen evening in the Sunday schoolroom on Monday evening. The evening, was arranged by the ladies' council, and was an entire success. Miss Halligan, who is about to be married, has been a member of the choir for a number of years, and is also on the Sunday school teaching staff, and she has been one of the church's most ardent collectors. The numbers who attended, and the excellence of the gifts presented furnished ample evidence of the very hi«rh esteem in which Miss HaUiean is held by the members of the church, and showed in a very marked degree their appreciation of her church work. Last week Miss HalHpjan was entertained at a pantry evening at the. residence of Mrs Wilsden, Factory road, where the hostess had made it possible for Hnlligan to meet a number of old friends, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The members nf the. tennis section of the Belfast Sports Club also entertained Miss Hnllijran at a social evening. The programme consisted of competitions, Tames, nnd danr-ine. Mr C. A charming Christchurch lady was ofcerved in Cashel street yesterday wearing a charming sable dyed .Marmot Fur Coat of the very latest style in a short walking length. The first social function of the C&urch Congress, held yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended by the clergy, their wives, and friends. In the grounds of Christ's College a (very large marquee had been erected, and here, with the despatch and thorougnness eloquent of good management, delicious afternoon tea was served, the tables being artistically decorated with bowls of gold and white chrysanthemums ana gold and white daisies. After tea the guests viewed pictures of various church institutions of different dioceses, and many interesting curios of early missionary life.
