TIMARU. Social and Personal. Miss Reid (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs Ehvorthy (Claremont). Mr and Mrs Holdsworth (Wellington) and Mrs J. Deans (Christchurch) are at present staying in Timaru. The Rev. T. Wilson Potts left Timaru for Dunedin yesterday to attend a meeting of the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee. Captain Clayton, marine superintendent of the Shaw, Savin, and Albion Company, is at present in Timaru. Mr E. P. Lee was a passenger for Oamaru by yesterday morning's express. Timber Yard Accident. At about 11 a.m. yesterday a man named M. Ritchie, an employee of Messrs John Jackson and Company, met with a nasty accident. He was working a circular saw when a piece of timber jammed and then flew back, striking him on the hip bone. Several of ,the other workmen rushed to Ritchie's assistance, and he was removed to the hospital. On enquiry at the hospital last evening, it was found that his injuries were not serious. Magistrate's Court. Charged with being found drunk in Stafford street on Monday night, Martin Joyce appeared at the Timaru Magistrate's. Court yesterday, before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. Joyce's face was hardly recognisable as a face, being cut and badly bruised, in addition to two black eyes'.
Asked how he got into such a condition, defendant told the Magistrate that he had been "falling about a lot," and then someone had "tackled" him. His recollection of the midnight fracas was, however, exceedingly hazy. Defendant said he had work to go to, and Mr Mosley glanced through his record, finding 31 previous convictions. His expressive ejaculation at the conclusion of the list of offences was "Oh, dear." A conviction and .14 days' imprisonment was the penalty. ' John Fry, on a similar charge, and with a list of previous convictions; was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. Rugby Union. The Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union met on Monday night, when it was resolved that all games not played by High School during the vacation should be counted as forfeited. '■ The fourth grade match, Pleasant Point v. Washdyke, was awarded' to the latter on account of Pleasant Point playing a man over the ago limit. The Borough Council notified that a parking place for motor-cars outside the Athletic Grounds had been' "approved as follows: —From a point 33ft west of main entrance to sports ground, to a point 33ft east of Otipuii road.
The Southland Rugby Union wrote confirming September 19th as the date for the South Canterbury match it Invercargill. The Otago Rugby Union" confirmed September 15th for the representative fixture at Dunedin..
The . question of playing a third round for the premiership was discussed, and the matter was held over in the meantime. ~*.''■ Association Football. ■ '.
