IDENTIFYING MOTORS.
NUMBER DISCS OBSCURED., The indifferent lighting on the rear of a large number of motor vehicles makes it impracticable to distinguish the registered numbers after sunset, reported the Traffic Inspector to the Auckland City Council last week. He mentioned! that none fif the. present legislation or by-laws sufficiently proviued for the illumination of registered numbers, but that the iLiigiisn iioads Act adequately deait witii the matter. It was to the following effect; "Whenever during the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise a vehicle is used on a public highway, a lamp shall be kept burning on the 'Vehicle, so contrived as to illuminate by means of reflection, transparency, or otherwise, and render easily distinguishable every letter or figure on the identification plate fixed on the back of the vehicle or of any vehicle . attached to the back of the vehicle, as the case may be," and that fancy number plates on the rear of motor vehicles accentuates the difficulty of identification at night. The City Solicitor reported tfiat he thought the matter vrss one for the Government to deal with, for the Motor Regulation Act.made provision for the making of regulations for facilitating the lighting of motors and their identification marks.
The inspector recommended that the attention of the Minister be drawn to the matter. This was adopted. !
