. * A CLERK'S DOWNFALL. (PESSS ASSOCIATION TELEQBA U.) AUCKLAND, April 2b'. "I used the money to bot on horse races. One day I lost as' uiuch as £3O. 'When 1' had a win I would pay the money back." So ran a passage in a statement made bj' a young clerk employed in the Union Steam Ship Company's office when charged with stealing sums totalling £457, the property of the company. The accused, who was 19 years of age, appeared in the Police Court, and a plea of guilty. Early in 1921 he commenced to steal sums of money. "When freight dues were paid he failed to account for them in the proper way, but endeavoured to balance each month by paying in money received. The cash liandlod was not sufficient to allow him to continue tho system. He had made restitution of £ls. Ho was committed for sontence, bail being allowed in one surety of £SOO. An order was made that his name be not published.
