DIP-STAINS.
A PREVALENT TROUBLE. Dip-stains formed the subject of a verbal report given to Wednesday's meeting of the North Canterbury Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union by the chairman, Mr W. "VV. Mulholland, on behalf of the agricultural committee. Mr Mulholland produced' several samples of wool uearing obvious signs of dip-stain, aud said that it was proposed to hold a conference with importers of dip and lay the position before them. The assistance of the Government, also, might be invited, dips be analysed perhaps, and experiments made to show whether the dip, or the user, was to blame, discovering the dips most liable to stain, and recommending those that were not so liable. TIIO loss of lat6 through dip-stain was too considerable to go on without some strong action being taken. The Agricultural Committee would do its best to find out where the fault lay. It was tolerably certain that the fault did not lie altogether with the grower. The amount of dip-staining had shown a marked increase during the past two years, it had been fairly pronounced a number of years ago, but had been corrected, showing that the fault lay in the fixtures, and if that were not put right, importers would find a very big decrease in the sales. Some of the samples, Mr Mulholland added, showed very high depreciation, and in one in-stance-the loss on lamb was about Is 6d per head. After some discussion, in which various opinions were expressed, the report was adopted.
