The total would have been much lnr-wr but for the application of a more rigid classifying-not before it was tune. Ihe laxity allowed in the class of cow beef entrie* has bean scmowhat abused during the past few months, and yesterday a very desirable check was administered, a, substantial proportion of light stews and old cows being transferred to the store pens. There was a much better representation of wellfinished beef. The market .opened, easier, but held up fairly well, principally for the primest beef. On an average, howevir, values wero lower than the preceding week by Is to Is Gd per ICOlb. Good well finished be if made fmm 2Ps 6d to 235, a few pens of ex-ccptiona-lly good beef a couple of sliilltnga over but a good deal of moderately finished beef'averaged from 2Gs to 235. Ihere were fewer potter prices, due to the more riaid classification, but nevertheless there were cows sold at £3 downwards. Tlw■ b.st draft forward was from Sharp Bros.
