MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Automobile Association was held last night, Mr A. Dudley Dobson presiding. At the request of the Returned Soldiers' Association it was decided to supply a number of cars for the conveyance of disabled soldiers in 'Ji'kO procession to tne memorial service on --inzae Day. ivir it. jtlacartney said that in view ,of the coming municipal elections ho tuought tUe time was opportune lor the association to ask that their voice should be heard in the framing of the by-laws of the city and in the formation of roads. The association, as an independent body, should taiie its part in o\'iering suggestions as to the formation of streets, and the alteration of streets. Tne Government had reeognised the principlo by allowing the association to nominate >a representative for the Main Highways .board. He thought it would be a benefit if the association werp allowed a representative especially on. thv by-laws committee. Lochhead sale* the Mayor had mad© a suggestion for such representation. Mr Macartney said one matter in which the council had failed, was to carry out the erection of silent policemen at various corners. The chairman said there was a representative on the council's by-Jaws committee, but apparently he had never been called on. Mr E. W. Johnstone said the council apparently approved of the principle but uid not carry it into practice. The question of the improvement of street direction signs was referred tp the roads committee. The roads committee was asicd to enquire into the dangej to traffic through the continuation or Chester street eastwards. At present there is a risk that drivers not familiar u'ith the route may proceed ahead into a deep channelling instead of turning to the left.
