CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

$ OPENING OF SEASON. The Canterbury Caledonian Society opened their season in the Art Gallery on Monday evening. There was a record attendance of members, the hall being absolutely filled. The president, Mr C. S. Thomas, occupied the chair, and was supported by Messrs G. Ritchie. A. McKenzie, G Sey, and R. H. Rankin, vice-presidents. The president, in his opening remarks, said' that it was not eight years since he was first elected president of tho Society, and he had never felt more confidence in it than he did at the present time. Last year had been one of hard work and' endeavour, but this was to be a year of fulfilment. The Society was ready to make a new place in the community. When they opened activities last year nothing had been done in regard to the new hall. Now, owing to the hard work of the office-bearers and the executive, the hall was almost finished, and in two months they would be able to take possession. It would then be the proudest Scottish Society of the Dominion, and he would he the proudest member of it. Over thirty new members had been elected since the last meetiner. and a large number had been nominated. Last year the bringing in of new members had been discouraged, owing to lack of space and facilities, put now they were to be encouraged. In order to raise funds for furniture ior the new building an AH Nations and Cabaret week would be held soon after the opening of the hall, and a Surprise Packet Day had also been arranged Mr Thomas also referred to the proposal on foot to build >-a Concert Chamber in .Christchurch, and said he did not think there was any necessity for a Concert Chamber in Christ- / church, as the Caledonian Hall v when built, would supply the want. A programme arranged by the president and Mr J>. Young, one of the Directors, was carried out. The Society's Pine Band, under Pipe-Major J. Shanahn, pave selections, were given bv Messrs Crowhurst, T. J. Mr-kev. "The Lyric Four," Mrs SHlard. and Miss' Kathleen PhilnottScottish stories, by Mr Alex.
