GOSSIP ABOUT NEW ZEALANDERS. (raOH OTTB OTOT COBKESP9NDEHT.) LONDON, March 8. Mr R. McGillivray (Department of Agriculture, Christc'..uroli) is still studying at Reading University College. During tfye past few months hei has carried out very interesting investigations, with gratifying results. He has been testing the duration of certain grasses and herbs, generally included when laying land down to permanent pasture. The investigation was undertaken in Berkshire and Oxfordshire, on folds winch had been in grass for periods ranging from one year to eighty years. Considerable data was also obtained as to the spontaneous appearance of certain useful .grasses in the older pastures. The absence of severe fiosts enabled Mr McGillivray to proceed with his pasture, work without loss of time. In the Easter vacation ho intends going to Franco and Switzerland, where matters connected with agriculture will have special interest for him. Recent callers at the High Commissioner's office have included Mr J. F. St. B. Barclay (Christchureh;, Mr H. S. H. Gilmer "(Wellington), Mr James L. Macfarlanc (Amuri), Major H. H. Pounds, Mr Cyril S. Brice (Wellingten), Mr T>'ArcV Oresswell (Christchureh), Mr H. J ."Daliny (Christchureh) and Miss Da-lmy, Mrs' F. C. AYeoler (Christchurch) and the Misses Wooler, Mr G. Donaldson CBntnedin).

Sir J. J. Burnet } the architect for the cemeteries on Galhpoli P nins .In and in Palestine, has been r commended by the Royal Institute of British Ai chitects to receive the Royal Gold M'dal for" Architecture for the year 1923. Last year the medal was presented to Mr Thomas Hastings, of New York, and in 1921 to Sir E. Lutyens. Born in Glasgow, Sir J. J. Burnet is G6 years of age, and the head of the architectural firm of John Burnet, Stan, and Dick, Glasgow, and of Sir John Burnet and Partners, London. Ho is a Royal Scottish Academecian. and he has ;>lso r.ceived honours in France and America.

Dr. Hugh R. Mill is emi ged on "The Life of Sir Ernest Shackleton," which will be told in three parts. "Equipment" is of his childhood, his early days at school, and his first Antaict-:c adv.nture. "Achievement" shows his attainment of fame as an explorer; "Bafflement" complete- a life--tory ot apparent failure retrieved. Dr. Mill was an intimate fri nd of Sir Ernest for twenty years. Messrs Heincrrann have the publication of the book well in , hand. '

Mr H. C. Morton (Wellington), who re:€ntly passed the final examination of the .Royal Institute of British Architects, is leaving England next week bv the Hohson Bay. .AiVr a few weeks in Australia, where he has relatives, he will cross to Wellington. Mr Morton has been studying in London for about a year.
