His Grace the Rev. Dr. Eedwood, S.M.. Mr J. J. Maekle wa> god-father to the boys, and Mrs B. Maekle god-mother to' the girls. Tlu Church was crowded, and at the conclusion of the ceremony an address, signed on behalf of the parishioners, by Messrs B. Maekle, A. Keeuau, J. Curtain, G. D. Smith, A. J. O'Malley, E. A. W, Smith, J. Peoples, and G. Eaton, was presented to his Grace: His Grace, replying, thanked the parishioners i'or their address and said that he was pleased to And that his appeal for the presbytery had not been in vain, and that a beautiful residence, which he was informed was clear of debt, had been tuiit. Eight year? ago he had scoided the parishioners soundly, and it seemed a scolding, at times, was good lor everyone. His Grace referred to vj-.o work of the School Committee, and to the work of Father Arkwright in connexion with the proposed new church hi the township. The recent enlargement and improvements to the town church would he sufficient for the present. The money raised by the efforts of Father Arkwright would be earning interest and increasing, and if the efforts of the parishioners were sustained would, in a few years, roll up to a nice sized snowball —sufficient to build a new church, the site of which, facing the sea, was in an ideal situation. i-LO. made pleasing reference to the name (Star of the Sea) of the proposed church. Comparing his previous visit _ of eight years ago with his present visit, his Grace said that he saw many changes in Kaikoura. There were four hotels, and the appointments of two of them were as good as one could wish for anywhere. His Grace spoke of the future of Kaikoura as a health and tourist resort, and in the course of his remarks said that Kaikoura was a pretty place that would attract tourists. There were to be obtained fishing, bathing, and excursions to the mountains, and the township could be made still more attractive. Continuing, his Grace said that he was approaching the 50th year of his episcopate, and was now senior bishop of the whole Catholic world. He recollected that in 1'874 he had been consecrated bishop at Westminster by the late Cardinal Manning, and he called to mind incidents reminiscent of his office of bishop. He was looking forward with joyous anticipation to March 17th next, when he would celebrate j his jubilee, and bishops from Austfa- | lia and the Bishop of San Francisco ; would be present. If he was spared ! until then (and on a recent occasion when he had visited Kome he was told : by the late supreme Pontiff that he | had learned the art of living) he in- ; vitcd all the parishioners to be pre- ■ sent. ! Concluding, his Grace wished the ■ parishioners every blessing, and expressed the hope that they would enjoy continued health, happiness, and prosperity. At the conclusion of his reply his Grace bestowed his blessing upon the kneeling parishioners. i
