0 —— WAITANGI BRIDGE. i j (SPECIAL TO "TEE FBIS8.") GREYMOUTH, April 6.. Work on the Waitangi bridge (South Westland) has been retarded owing to the delay in the delivery of timber from the mill. Mr T. Murray, of Cobden, who iB carrying out the bridgebuilding contract, expects to finish tho work in a few weeks, when the necessary timber is available. Croquet. i The final matches for the Makura Croquet Club's championship provided interesing games. Mesdames Tenuant and McKay met in the liual, and after a close game, in which the croquet was of a very high order, Mrs McKay succeeded in winning. In the junior division championship, Mrs Topliss won from Mrs Clarke. The juuior division handicap single was alao won by Mrs Topliss, the runner-up being Mrs Clarko. The rose bowl competition was won by Mrs Johnson. Grey Rifle Club. The final shoot for the Grey Rifle Club's Bromley Belt has concluded, and resulted in a very close finish. "Kiiienien ioung and Richardson tied for first nlaco with 273. Rifleman Moss being next with 269. The winner was decided by shooting off five shots each between Riflemen Youne and Richardson, and was won by the latter. * Casualty. Mr Albert Manderson, who was injured whilst at work yesterday in Manderson's co-operative mine, at Dunollie, was admitted to the Grey River Hospital. Social. Mr Fergus Barrowman, whose marriage to Miss Elizabeth Innes, of South Beach, takes place on Monday next, was mot by the staff of the Greymouth Harbour Board this afternoon and presented with a handsome dinner set. Mr W. B. Gilbert, secretary of the Board, in making the presentation, referred to Mr Barrowman's many good qualities, and wished him and his future bride every prosperity. Returned R.S-A. Some Dominion centres report apathy regarding returned soldiers' clubs, and declare tliat tho end is in sight, but Holcitika is maintaining interest in its ex-soldiers, and great success is attending the efforts to erect a soldiers' club in the town. The ladies are enthusiastic, and substantial help is thus already assured. The site is central, and the building scheme includes the provision of & commodious _ social hall, with all requisite conveniences, and a fine club room, to include .a billiard room, library, card and club rooms. Technical Schools. Tlife Coast is developing greas interest in its several technical schools, and is keen on discussing ways and means to make easier the path of those who wish to utilise the opportunities offered by such institutions. Tho Westport Technical High School Board will forward the following remits to the forthcoming Dominion conference: —(1) That representations be made to Minister of Education that a boarding allowance of 5s per week should bo granted to pupils of Technical High Schools who are compelled to reside away from home, each case to be decided on the circumstances of the parents. (2) That in the case of itinerant instructors, travelling time should count as equal to half teaching time. (3) That as the Department is now adopting standard school books, it is advisable that books should be supplied by the Department to booksellers at a set price to be re-' tailad at a fixed maximum price to pupils- ■
