"BADLY CONDUCTED."
MAGISTERIAL COMMENTS ON EXCELSIOR HOTEL. The management of the Excelsior Hotel was commented on in unfavourable terms by Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. "The Excelsior Hotel once again!" he said, after hearing police evidence against Donald Forbes, aged 52 years, who was charged that on March 27th he was found on the premises of that hotel after hours. Mr Wilson said that many people were found on the premises after hours, and some of them were in a state of drunkenness. He had commented on the fact before the annual meeting of the Liconsiiig Committee, but it evidently had not been brought before the Cqmmittee. Apparently no good had come from his remarks. Senior-Sergeant Lewiu said that reports had been sent .in to the committee on all the hotels. "I can't make it any stronger," said the Magistrate. "It seems tome that the house has been badly conducted. The police have not objected and led evidence at the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee." Another man, James Joseph Kyne, was also charged with having been found at the Excelsior after hours. Defendant said he went there "legitimately" to see a friend. "I'm not in a state to pay fines," he declared. He could not do heavy work as tlie result of an accident, and ho was not fitted for a clerical occupation. The Magistrate said he appeared to be contrite. "Leave the hotels alone," he advised; "if you take out a prohibition order' I wiil convict you without penalty." Kyne did not take long to mako up his mind. He was convicted without penalty. Yet another, George Henry Olarkson, on a similar charge, was fined 20a and costs.
