Practically the whole of the transhipment of cargo, including wool, flax, and cheese, is. now handled on the Wellington wharves 'by motor tractors mid trailers. The work last year was somewhat intermittent; during the iirst six months 143,019 tons were handled, and in the last six months of the financial year 8i,852 tons. A record is kept ol the working costs, including driving, stores, power, cost of loading:, and -unloading and supervision, and also ol the cost of the labour and material used in maintenanoo. Interest at the rale of 6 per cent, on the capital cost is charged, and depreciation is based on an eight .years' life for the electric tractors, and a aix years' life for the gasolino tractors. The results obtained show a wide divergence, and the Harbour Board haa found that it ie not likely at present to bs economical to have a much larger number of tractora torn has been, provided. It is considered better policy to hire outside vehicles at times of abnormal rual. VESSELS WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE OF N.Z. At the meeting of the Otsgo Harbour Board, held on 'Xnureday evening, a letter was received Horn Captain .Uown.ovt;, of the Kaikoura, complaining of the danger caused to his vessel by hahiug launches operating outside the Heirtia without lights. The secretary said that lie had forwarded the complaint to the Otago fishermen's '.Society, and had rtceived the following reply from Mr 'l'hoinas Anderson, the secretary of the society. V ' Mr Anderson stated that he had had copies of tho correspondence posted in public and conspicuous places, and had also interviewed all fishermen. The fishermen definitely stated that they lad carried lights on the morning in question, and always did. The writer continued:— "When the fishing boats leave the Heads-they go in a northeast direction to the fishing grounds, and on this particular Ynorning, they passed a large steamer, presumably the Kaikoura. "The fishermen have been very ÜBeful to several matters in thick, foggy weather, by informing them where they were, and as to whether the anchorages were safe or otherwise. We could have laid complaints against several steamers in broad daylight when one came down upon cne cr two fishermen who had to cut their bank lines and escape destruction. We do not desire to do such things, but since this has unexpectedly been sprung upon the fishermen, we will in future notify the Marine Department of the failure pf steamers to blow their fog horns in heavy, thick weather, as on many occasions when \ the fog has lifted, the fishermen have received a very rude shock to find large ocean liners right up alongside them, and were unaware of their presence through failure of masters to adhere to the regulations in thick, hoavy weather ,and there wan one case in particular where, had the steamer been moving instead of being stationary, a big catastrophe would havo eventuated. One large steamer was prevented by the fishermen from going ashore at the north head, Waikouaiti Bay, another from landing on the Puddingstone, and still another from going ashore in the same place as the Tyrone. Probably the fishermen's lights drew tho steamer, s»nd that accounts for her biing in such a, position, five miles off. Further" boats have besn Been south of the lfchV house at Cane Saunders, near the island" in broad daylight, and we could'mention numerous breaches of the marine regulations, but do no- desire to make any complaints when we consider that no good will be achieved between masters of ships and fisher-
