MISS SHAND'S FINE PERFORMANCE. Craoir oto ows correspondent.) SYDNEY, March 1. The Now Zealand mermaids, G-witha Shand and Violat Walrond, again showed their superiority by defeating Australia's best at tho Domain Baths, Sydney, last Saturday. The big item on the programme was the 440 yards chempionship of Australia, in which Gnitbtt Shand, Violet Walrond, and Hina Wylio again met. The positions en the board from the right were:— B. Charlton (N.S.W.), G. Shand (N.Z.), E. Venning (Queensland!), M. Wylio (N.S.W.), V. Walrond {N.Z.), and L.'Robertson (N.S.W.). Enid Charlton was first away At tho 2u yards made Misses Shand, Wylie, and Walrond to?k the lead, Mibs Walrond leaving them at 75 yards, and at tie turn "was followed by Misses Shand a,nd Wylie. Miss Shand soon caught Miss Walrond in the second lap, and Miss Wylie dropped back. Miss Shand was first to turn at tho end of the socond lap. From now on it developed into en exhibition of various strokes. Miss Shand), swimming with the greatest of case, using the trudgeon crawl, gave a fine demonstration of the stroke, in contrast to the more crawl-liko actions cf Misses Wahrond and Wylie. All three sprinted over the last 30 yards, Miss Shand winning by five yards from Misa w\lrond, with Miss Wylie 20 yards away third. Tho timo was 6min 9 l-sf>ec, breaking the winner's previous record established at Honolulu last year by 5 2-ssec.
SURF ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of tho Canterbury Surf Association was held last evening: at the Tepid l Baths. Mr C. Bryant presided. The application of the J£owai Surf and Life Saving Club that the club colours should be registered oa "All Black' 1 costume was approved. A sub-committeo, consisting of Messrs K. Bassett, G. Pearse, 0. iiryant, R. \V. Mallosch waß set up to Tevise the rules of the Association. On the motion of Mr Bassett it was deoided that the Association should pay ior the engraving of all the Association s skidds and cup 3. It was decided to have a letterhead printed for the Association's use. The secretary was instructed to take any steps ho thought ht mattor. MILITARY CARNIVAL. Tho -forthcoming military swimming carnival is creating a good deal of interest amongst Territorials and Cadets, as well as those who belong to private swinuming clubs. Already 115 entries have been received— 19 in events for Territorials, 58 in the Senior Cadet class and 88 in the club races. ' A RECORD LOWERED. (PSESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) T ~ , NAPIER, March 7. In the 100 yds Hawke's Bay Provincial Swimming Championship to-night, Lound lowered the New Zealand intermediate record by a-ssec, covering the distance in G2 l-ssec.
