The Canterbury Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association have already appointed Mr Jacobs to the Council of the League.

The following candidates for the Council electron at Sumner have been approved by the Sumner Burgesses' Association :—Messrs H. V. Jones, H. C. S. Jamieson, F. C. Cooper, J. H. Thomas, G. A. Alexander, C. M. lloswiil, H. W. Harris and li. Peck. After being associated with- the Stratford branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., for the past 22 years, 2Vlr A. W. Hewitt is retiring at the end of the present month. Mr Hewitt intends to take up farming but before doing so will pay a visit to the Old Country. Commissioner Booth-Tucker has arrived in New Zealand to preside over, the annual convocation of the Salvation Army. He has a record of splendid work at Home and in America and India. He was accorded a civic welcome at Wellington yesterday, and his work for the Army was eulogised. Feeling reference was made at last night's meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League to the deatn of Mr (i. W. Thomas, for many years town* clerk of Akaroa, and a vote of condolence was passed to his relatives. Eulogistic reference was made to the late Mr Thomas's energy on behalf of his borough and of the province general.

Colonel M. I>. Graham, C.8., C.M.G., C.V.0., who arrived at Lyttelton bv the Port Caroline on Tuesday is staying at the Clarendon, and will continue the journey to Dunedin by the vessel on Friday. He will visit several places of scenic interest in the South before returning to Christchurch. Colonel ■Graham was bom in 1865 and entered the army in Isß6, becoming captain in 1893. He was promoted major in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in 1806, and 'Lieut.Colonel in the Royal Berks Regiment ill 1912. He served in many parte of the world with the Imperial Army, and was severely wounded in the 'Great War. He received the 1514 star, the Russian Order of St. Anne, the Serbian Order of the White Eagle, thirdclass officer of the Legion of Honour (.France), second-class Order of WenHu (China), and Croix de Guerre (Belgium). He was thrice mentioned in despatches. From 1916 to 1921 Colonel, Graham was Deputy Military Secretary at the War Office, and he held that position when Sir Alexander Godley was Military Secretary. Colonel Graham was also A.D.C. to the King from 1918 to the.time of his retirement last year.
